You're going to need a very small screwdriver (or ideally two) but before you start, you have to respect how easy it is to get dust in and how tricky it is to get it out again. Don't clean up the focus screen when its out (you'll most likely just add slight imperfections - use a blower if you need but nothing else) and make sure and choose the room you use very carefully - it must be absolutely dust free... don't hoover just before either
The screen is basically held in by a small metal retainer that bends in place behind a small plastic clip, you'll need to bend it away from the clip and stop it from flying open... pretty easy when you know how but its gonna give you sweaty palms while you do it for the first time and you might get a head rush holding your breath all that time too.
Here's a guide for the D200 - iirc the retainer clip must be undone in the opposite direction (ie: towards the mirror, scarily) but it's pretty much the same - you can tell by reading the instructions then looking into your camera and working it out from there.
Undoing mine was straight-forward and I don't remember undoing any screws... it was just as it is with the d200 but latched in the other direction... anyway good luck
ah, just saw your post on clubsnap! handy they have a d300 guide - well hidden from google that! none the less, dont worry about the two small black screws - they may obscure the view slightly but they certainly don't get in the way. Look in the image after the one you mentioned in the other forum and you'll see them behind the "n" in "bend" and the "t" in "latch"
