Hi,

I've just come back off holiday and tried connecting my 40D to my laptop via usb but nothing happens :'(

I have connected it countless times in the past and haven't done anything differently this time except before trying to connect it I used the video lead to show a few of the pictures to some of my family (this was the first time I had used the video lead)

I disconneted the video lead then went to my laptop (windows vista) plugged the usb lead in and switched the camera on but nothing :( Nothing shows up on 'My Computer' and the EOS utility doesn't detect anything either

BUT I do hear the usual connect tone that windows plays when you connect something via usb. The top display of the camera shows 'busy' for a few seconds but then returns to the normal screen. But that's it I cannot seem to transfer the pictures.

Any ideas anyone?

(Ps. I know i could just get a CF card reader but it's really bugging me why this used to work and now it doesn't.)

Thanks,

Stu.

Doesn't sound good. The first thing I would try is CF card out and battery out of camera and leave it 30 seconds. Pop them back in and try again. Are you still able to preview the pictures in camera to rule out card failure?

Good luck!

If it does not show anything from looking at the file through explore or on the camera you may need to use recovery software on the card to get the images back. Meantime don't format the card or take any more pictures using it. I have got a spare Sandisk recovery cd if you need one that I can get in the post tomorrow (today) if you need one.

Tried removing the battery and CF card but no joy :( and yes I can still view the images on the camera so I think I will pop to Jessops in the morning to get a CF reader to get the pictures off the card then i can have a better look to see if somthing more sinister has happened

Thank you susie will let you know if I need it.

Yea tried a usb memory stick and that works fine, thats the strange thing. I've also tried the other 3 usb ports but with no luck.

I meant no luck regarding the camera (the usb stick works fine in all of them)

The only other thing I can think is a fresh reboot of the laptop and try again. Or try on another computer/laptop to see if it recognises it. May be a damaged lead from camera to laptop?

Sorry, running out of ideas here....

It maybe a duff USB cable ... do you have a spare from another device?

try a different cable first. what version of vista do you have, canon dont supply 64bit drivers if i remember rightly.

if its making the ping noise in windows when its plugged in then its recognising the camera is attached, go into device manager (right click "computer" and do "manage") is there anything in the list with a yellow "!" ?

I have a similar problem with the latest version of EOS Utility. Camera connects, then just pauses (hence the USB sound, then nothing else).

Start the Task Manager, select the program EOS Utility.exe , and select 'end task'
Now connect the camera. Wait for it to stop, and then run EOS Utility from the Canon menu on your start menu. The camera should bounce back into life again (reading from your CF card), then connect properly.

For some reason, I have to do this almost every time now since the latest EOS update I applied.

Ok so just looked at device manager and the only item with a yellow "!" was the 40D itself! :bang: Checked the status and there was an error message about not being able to load the driver. Sorted the driver issues out and hey presto it is now behaving and working as it should :D

Thank you for all your help.

When I've had chance to sort through the 2000 or so shots I'll get round to uploading a few.

Thanks again for all your help, much appreciated :thumbs:
