Hello there,

I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member.

I have been taking holiday snaps and photo's at work (I am an archaeologist and so need to take record shots for excavation archives) for a number of years and really just going through the motions. Three years ago I purchased my first digital camera (a Nikon Coolpix 7900), ready for a trip to Hawaii, and that was where it all began.

The freedom of being able to take different types of photographs, without the fear of wasting money was intoxicating. I found myself filling two 512mb cards with more than just the normal holiday snaps, one of which now hangs framed in the bathroom (an emerging fern). Since then I have played with my Nikon taking different and interesting photographs.

About a year ago I decided to take the plunge and brought my first dSLR, a Canon EOS 400D and set about playing around with it and trying to learn the ins and outs. A year later and I feel I am getting better, I’m not progressing too well on the more technical side of things. I have to admit that I don’t fully understand apertures and timing (but I figure that just takes practice) and I probably rely a bit too much on post processing, but I am still having fun.

In general I like to take landscape and nature photographs. My main passion at the moment is wildlife photography, and the discovery of a nice little zoo near to where I live along, with receiving a zoom lens as a birthday gift, has helped fuel this.

I am still very much a beginner and realise I have a lot to learn. I am looking into taking some photography courses, maybe the Open University one, along with some more specialist courses too (that local zoo I mentioned does one that’s caught my eye).

I thought this seemed like a good place to come and try to expand my knowledge of photography and hopefully get some (constructive) criticism of a few of my photographs. I have a simple website at www.excarn.co.uk (feel free to visit and post comments), but I will put a few of the images up on the site say people can try and point me in the right direction.

Anyway, that's me. Just wanted to say hi and I hope to see you all around.
