My Name is Michaela and Im 26 years of age and for a long time now i have been really intrested in photography. Its something i have always thought of but because of work etc never really got round to it.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice really. Courses that are avaliable, books to read etc. Basics really just to get started and what Its all about.

I'm still an amateur so cant give much advice to do with courses and books etc, but the main thing I would say is to just enjoy yourself when taking photos, dont let it feel like a chore if you start feeling like there are rules to follow or settings you must use, be creative and get outside etc and just take tonnes of photos of whatever interests you :)
I would definetely invest in either a photoshop programme, or picasa which you can dowload free on the internet, these programmes will help add a bit more magic to photos and help to crop, straighten etc.

Anyway I'll stop rambling, welcome to the photography world and this forum, enjoy learning new things, and hope to see some photos soon! :D

Wander down to your libarary and get hold of a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peters, that would be a good start to understanding the main technical points, then go shoot some stuff and post it on here for critiques and advice. Do you have a camera yet, or decided what area of photography interests you, portrait, wildlife, birds...

Hi Michaela,

have a look at your local college - they may have some adult learning courses which are really valuable in getting you to think around your camera and try out some different stuff.

make sure you get a 'flickr' account and post lots of photos up for help and advice, go to exhibitions and really have a think about why you like particular images, and above all, take lots of photos :)

Hi Michaela and welcome to TP!

Here is a little simulator to get you started and give you an idea of the basics. Look at both the simulator and explainer. They both allow you to make adjustments to the settings and then show you the results.

Good luck.

Hi Michelle, welcome.

What may be a good idea and starting point is find out what type of photography inspires you. It could be landscape (beachscape, seascape), social documentary, still life, black & white, people, wildlife etc etc and take it from there.

I find any of the photo sharing websites a good source of inspiration.

Good luck.

Scott
