from a fellow "Jock". The forums are a rich source of information for the beginner just be sure to stick to the factual basics initially and dont read so much into/or be influenced by opinions (which as with any subject vary wildly). Like any forum regardless of content just be a little selective and stay in the shallow waters of the beginners sections till you become more familiar with terminology and comfortable with your own equipment. Above all dont be put off and have fun and make lots and lots of mistakes because everyone does even us seasoned photographers, but you never get to see out garbage. 
Its the best way to learn.
