You want to steer well clear of Nikon's, I've heard their owners are not nice people. But us Canon owners will make sure you on the right road. :D Welcome to the forum.

lol thanks Andy, i had only breifly touched the canons in the shop until the other day and had a go on the 550d which i was very impressed with the picture quality but the camera was out of my price range, well more than i want to spend atm anyway.

i havent got a clue what to go for at the moment and im itching to get some kit and start taking pics.

thanks for the welcome ;)

......;) and :welcome:

go for a Nikon D5000...............probably with a kit lens 18-55 VR

but hold off on the zoom till you know what you will be needing

although if it is a Nikon 55-200 VR that's well worth having
easily sold should you wish to upgrade later to a 300mm whatever

trouble is - most "bundles" are made with a zoom that's not up to the quality of the Nikon 55-200 VR....ps *VR* is a godsend on the longer zooms

the D5000 kit is proberly what im going to go for tbh, though wish i had the budget to get the D90, ive been offered(on another forum) an 18-105 vr lens quite cheap so dont know if its worth just gatting the D5000 body only and then adding a 200mm or 300mm vr zoom lens:shrug:
how is the 18-55vr lens rated on here?

steering you towards the D5000.....:D..."review"

I bought a D5000 with 18-55 DX [not VR] then sold the lens as I had a Sigma 17-70 2.8....anyway
the 18-55 is a lens with good reviews......Ken Rockwell "link" and thom [search]
the VR maybe would be an advantage - never owned so cannot comment

the 18-105 is off the D90[think] ....supposedly good but takes larger filter sizes [67mm] than the 18-55 [52mm]

only a prob if you want super expensive filters, B+W, Hoya HD et al.

have a look at prices to see which cheaper

D5000 kit - sell lens here £60 maybe £70 if VR
or
body only

Thanks John;) that review was a long one lol but very good. cant wait to get a camera in my hand and get shooting.

Hiya
I'm a noob too, I have found the Canon 40d to be quite user friendly and the feeling I get is that the more experianced I get with it the better it gets and will last ages without having to upgrade as I get to discover more and more features and vast amount of lenses.

Yes! :D Nikon for show, Canon for pro. :canon:
...and...
"You want to steer well clear of Nikon's"...

.......this may all be tongue-in-cheek but Dan is not helped by such remarks

your Canon suggestion is excellent, but the OP mentions budget

sorry to speak in the 3rd person, Dan....:)

you need to set a budget allowing for memory cards, say a tripod, bag etc

if you're looking at about £500 I would again suggest the D5000 --- or a Canon in the same price/spec range

lol thanks John its fine  im more chilled than a freezer so tongue in cheek is good for me:D
yes my budget is around £500 though would consider upping it if the deal was an extremely good one, ive already got a HAMA star61 tripod that we got for our sony camcorder but yes im realising i need a mem card and definatly a bag to lug it all around in.
i might be dreaming here but im hoping to get the camera body plus two lenses mem card, bag for my budget, ive also been offered a nikon 18-105vr lens with a hoya uv filter for £160:thinking::shrug:

any recomendations as to wheres a good site to go to and get the best deal for my budget, ive been down to park cameras near me but they dont really seem that interested in cutting a deal and didnt seem that keen to help either:thumbsdown:

Nikon 18-105 VR ..? you could use this as your walk-around lens - so only need a body

£160 ?- sorry no idea - none listed on eBay for comparison
the Hoya UV could be "cheap green box grade" = bin it
or Hoya HD series - worth lotsa ££

sorry cannot help more about a site.. maybe give Digital Depot a call ?...john

i might have to go for the d3000 kit then:'( not that i want to but i feel i'll get sucked right in and start spending way more than i planned, or might just wait till the d5000 comes down in price or a cheaper deal pops up.

here's an idea...[as i dont like the d3000 reviews]..........

many have gone this route...i did

look for a used D40 with 18-55 kit lens...i paid £240 Nikon refurbished

super camera to get started...quite capable

after a year, move up to a D5000 body

I sold the D40 body with no prob here to a newcomer

add a 55-200 VR at £120 ....good kit to get going for several years...

I've said this before, and stick by it

a newcomer to TP may initially be put off by some members *humour*

wait a while.............

There more likely to be put off by members having a stupid little banter. :)
