you sound pretty generous if you are proposing a camera as a gift...the ones most people are longing for are quite expensive...

hope you get some advice..i stick to cheapie second hand stuff

Things to think about; what sort of budget do you have in mind; anyone else close to him using dSLR, if so then may be worthwhile sticking with that brand; how capable is he?
