I am starting to do night photography , mainly the built enviorment so achitectual ect . i use a Nikon D300 with a 10-20 sigma and 18-85 Nikon , i have read alot about using primes for night work due to there being less lens flare ect , is this true ? and if so should i consider a prime i already have the nifty 50 but would maybe go for the 24mm 2.8D is this a good choice or are there better wide angle primes out there .? .
Thanks james

Hello to you too :D

I'm not too sure that a prime will necessarily suffer less lens flare than a zoom of similar size and with comparable coatings etc. I may be wrong but prime lenses having less flare has never sprung to the front of my mind as being one of their main advantages.

For me personally the advantages of primes as... wider apertures for low light and limited depth of field shooting, macro, and of course they're sexier :D than zooms. Arguably.

I'm not a big fan of non macro f2.8 primes unless they offer some advantage such as being very compact and light or being very cheap or just really nice things as a f2.8 zoom will offer more flexibilty.

So, in your place I think I'd look at a quality 17-50mm f2.8 zoom or if going down the prime route (and why wouldn't you?) maybe a 28 or 30mm f1.4 or f1.8?

Just my 2p.
:D
