Hello all! :)

I'm new here. I wanted a bit of advice about buying a camera. I'm really interested in Photography (literally a beginner though -armed with a beginners guide to photography) and as I get to go to some amazing places with my job, I'd love to be able to photograph them properly.

I don't really have loads of money to buy all the kit, and wondered if any of the latest digital cameras (as opposed to SLRs) are good enough to take good pictures.

My current camera is a 4mp 3x optical zoom - bless - so it does the job, but not very well.

I was looking at some that are about 10mp with 12x optical zoom and several different 'modes' on.

If anyone could point me in the right direction of a great compact digital camera then I'd be really grateful

Why do you not want a SLR,

if it is price you can pick up canon 350d pretty cheap and i am also sure ( although i have never had one) that you may grow out of the s9600 very quickly

Dont worry im exactly the same, saving for my first slr now as i think they are a better long term option esp if u want to get into it more seriously...theres loads of great advice and information here and prob some good books and manuals around to get u started!

Pretty much agree with the above. If you can afford a DSLR, get one. As stated, a while down the line you may regret not having one and having laid out on a decent digital, it could be a false economy. It's all down to budget and your needs I suppose. The flexibility of DSLR's is much greater but the down side is it can be an expensive hobby.

I think I'm just worried I wont know how to use it properly!

So am I but I tell you what .. it's good fun learning. I'll practise with the manual mode most of the time but occaisonally when I 'must' get a shot without ballsing it up you can always switch to one of the preset modes ... even the full auto which is just like pointing and shooting a compact.

you will be fine with something like a 350d, you can even use evil GREEN box mode if nessecary. It will have all the features of the fuji plus many more and if you are feeling brave you can restort to the full manual mode.

Just 2 points to add. The camera doesn't take the picture you do. Reading the tutorials here and comments on pictures in critique and elsewhere will help improve your photographs more than changing the camera. And secondly whilst a DSLR will give you the best technical options if you are travelling on business then a bridge camera might be more practical.

I totally see where you are coming from jamtart - I have a Kodak Z710 point and shoot and I love it to death but the fact is, if I wanted to go anywhere in photography I needed an SLR.

I am 3 days down the line from buying a Canon 400D and having read the manual a gerzillion times, read numerous threads/books/magazines, had some helpful advice from folk on here, chatted LOADS to the dude who sold the kit to me, had a good old play with the settings and literally took lots of photos, I am now feeling more confident that I WILL be able to work it properly given time :D I'm sure you will too :D

Go on, go for it! You will kick yourself if you don't ;)

If money is a problem then try and source a second hand one. They really are worth the money :)

Good luck!
