Good afternoon, I’ve just joined. I’ve started to study my HNC Photography at College and I’m looking for ideas for my Graded Unit.

Hi John

As most of our membership likely haven't actually done the HNC Photography (at least recently) perhaps you'll have more luck if you give us some details of what this is likely to require...

a quick glance at the spec's for this ( http://www.mysqa.info/files/hn/DW9134.pdf ) seems to give the impression that it's basically an assessed project where you have to produce a "panel" of 10 images to a theme...

My first thoughts on this are quite simple - if you've an "open field" to chose from, then make it as easy on yourself as possible, by chosing a theme that you're already well versed in - basically, shoot your hobby... whatever that may be - because it's the thing you're most likely to be "expert in" - and you'll make a better job of it.

Hopefully someone who's been involved in formal education a little more than I have in the past 37 years may be able to give some more pertinent advice...

Don’t know the details of the course but if you get support and advice from your tutors while doing the Graded Unit then maybe pick something related to what you want to use your qualification for. That way you can get valuable insight and advice that may be of use to you in your future career as well as for getting the certification.

Thanks so much for the replies, we only briefly touched on it the other day. Hopefully this time next week, I’ll have more information

no problem John - please come back and post when you've more information, as i'm sure there are people on here that I certainly find good sources of inspiration, so once you've established your working parameters etc, I'm sure we'll be able to chip in some ideas - as I've said, if it's a "panel" type presentation, we've lots of people who've gone through the RPS system (in fact I'm fairly sure we've actually got a couple of people who are involved in judging certain panel presentations) so there's a wealth of experience from that side...
