Hi , I have ventured on to your forum as I am looking to take my photography up a level. I love taking pictures (love looking at other peoples pictures too) and want to make the next step. I have always had fairly basic point and shoot compacts in the past, my current camera being the Panasonic Lumix TZ10. I have been loaned a Canon EOS 400d and I am loving how much more I am able to do with it! I admit I am a total novice at this and am hoping to pick up some tips from you lovely people (or if anyone is local and fancies giving me a crash course!! :naughty: ) I have never edited a photo other than cropping it a bit, so I am basically starting from scratch!

I would like to invest in a dslr camera of my own, but don't really know what to get. I haven't got a very big budget, which is my biggest problem, so any recommendations?

Hi Laura and welcome to TP.

If you can hang on to the Canon for a while then do so before looking to buy a DSLR for yourself. That way you will get a better feel for what suits you (how a camera feels in your hands matters a lot). All DSLR's are very capable performers, but the bulk of people are brand loyal and may be well inclined to recommend the make they own.

The 400d is a great camera, I have one, still use it sometimes.
Which bit of mid Wales ar you? My parents used to live near rhayder, and it's a beautiful part of the country around there

I am only 13 miles from Rhayader in Builth Wells, it is a beautiful part of the world, well, I think so anyway!

Thanks for the welcomes, I do like the Canon, quite like the look of the of the Nikon too, so I am torn as to what to do really! I think at the end of the day it is going to come down to budget!

Big welcome :) I'm new too, and it's a great place to get started. You could ask around on the equipment section like I did, my choice was between a 500d and 550d, and people are still helping me on that thread.
But look at Nikon and Sonys range too, find a shop where you can see them for yourself as they may suit you better. Ignore the people who are brand loyal like Dougie says, and just look around the forums, and shops and see what suit you best :)
And look forward to seeing any photos, especially of your countryside, if you take any that is. I've been through Wales a few times and it is beautiful :)
