Hey Guys,

My names Craig, im 20 years old and I currently live in Manchester, UK.

I have always had a creative side to me, and I would like to say I have a great eye for Photography. However, I do not own a camera, other than the one on my phone, and I am looking at getting into it all to see what I can do!

I found these forums today, and I just want to say how good it looks. I look forward to buying my first DSLR and spending some time here, both learning from you, and sharing my first shots with you.

This now leads me onto my question. As I am totally new to this, can I have your suggestions on which DSLR I should be looking at? In terms of budget, I would like to say I could maybe stretch to £300-£350. However, anything under that would be a bonus.

I look forward to your replies,

Regards,

Craig.

Howdy Craig :)

There are a lot of cameras in that price range. With Canon and Nikon being the most popular two brands. As is always said on here it is always best to head into a camera shop and handle different camera to see which suits you best. The "started" DSLRs are about your price range and offer you the option in the future to add lenses etc. I would personally recommend then Canon 400D (which comes in at about £370 after Canon's current cashback scheme). There are tons of lenses that work on the 400D and it is a damn good camera! High Megapixel, good noise handling, anti dust, well built etc

I am sure the Nikon and other brand lovers will be along shortly :p

Hi Craig and welcome to the forums :wave:Theres quite a few of us from in and about Manchester on here now so make yourself comfy and enjoy the chat.

 Hello! How about the Nikon D40x

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127415

£358 inc Vat from Ebuyer, and I think that Nikon are offering some cashback similar to Canon at the moment?

It really depends what feels right in your hands though, when all's said and done, so get yourself down to a Jessops or somewhere to have a play.

Thanks for the welcome so far guys, much appreciated.

I have been looking around on Currys website, and came across this:

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/sto...duct&fm=10&sm=1&tm=0&sku=357388&category_oid=

Now it looks like I can get £50 back from Canon if I purchase this, is that correct? Also, my friend works at Currys and can get 10% discount. Would this work ontop of the cashback from Canon?

Regards,

Craig.

If you can get 10% discount then that makes it a pretty good price :) You should have no problem getting the £50 back from Canon as that is done my sending them info after the sale so it is £50 off whatever you get the camera for :)

If you cant get the 10% discount then might find a better deal online. Warehouse Express are a good company and have it for £412 (before the cashback) http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/digicameras/canon.html#400d

Having had a look on Currys, I see that they sell the Nikon D40. This is £300 with £30 Cashback and a possible 10% from my mate.

How does the D40 rate against the 400D?

Regards,

Craig.

Hello :)

Go feel some cameras! If you don't like the handling of one brand you can narrow your research.

How does the D40 rate against the 400D?

From what I have seen/heard the D40 doesnt handle noise as well as the canon 400, you are limited to the lenses you can use (I think there is a seperate fitting for the low end Nikons, could be wrong). Overall though they are quite similar cameras!

It might be worth starting a thread outside the welcome forum for advice from some Nikon users as for the merits of the D40 as it seems not many are finding this :)
