Hi,
I'm a total 'baby' in the photography world. I bought myself a point and click camera and decided it would be a great hobby. Maybe some day I'll have an eye for detail and get myself a half decent setup - but I wouldn't knbow where to start...! So - here I am. I'll be looking forward to any and all info from anyone - thank you in advance and for starters, coulkd anyone point me in the right direction for a starter/intermediate dslr???
Thanks...have a great day!

Hey Adam & Welcome to the forum!

May I ask what camera you're currently using?

If you were to start off in DSLR then for the Canon range you'd be looking at the XXXD or XXXXD series, bearing in mind there's only one XXXXD model available at the moment - the 1000D. As for Nikon, I believe you'd be looking either the Nikon D40/D60 or the D3000. All of these generally come with a kit lens, the Canon being the 18-55mm which is a good lens to start off with, and I also believe the Nikon comes with an 18-55mm, however I can't confirm that and I'm unsure on what the optical quality is.

I don't know much about Sony/Olympus or any others though, but I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to guide you better.

I hope you settle in well.

Hi Adam! :welcome: to TP! New or SH? There are some great bargains to be had on here for starter kits. You only need a few posts to buy gear, a few more to sell though! Most sellers are only to glad to answer your questions about the items.
Any budget in mind? That's always a big help.

I can recommend having a thorough read on here, the Talk Basics section has loads of good info for a beginner. I've just bought my first dslr kit used off the classifieds here to get going, I'll buy new when I know more about it. I'm building up a wish list but I think I'm going to be fine for quite a while with what I've got.

Hello and welcome to TP :) Have quick look on TP and find more information about cameras...that what im doing and im still hunting for new camera...taking ages!!

hey pple!
thanks for all the replies - appreciate it!
My budget at the moment is around the 500 mark - i can't justify spending more on something i don't know how to use, although i can kind of understand that a better camera would go further and last longer. at the moment i've got a cheap fuji s8100fd. if i go for a canon most pple kinda recommend), what kit lens would be suitable? and do all canon lenses fit all canon models? if that makes sense?

hi adam... welcome also from manchester!
i started with a canon 350d which i bought brand new for about £300 and then sold it on about a year or so later for about £200. It's a great starter camera and you'll achieve a lot with it. You'll find that even the starter camera's have the majority of the settings as the top end of the ranges, so all the questions / tutorials / tips and advice will be relevant to virtually all dslr's.
the ???d canon's will take virtually all the lenses across the range.. and you'd more than likely get the 18-55mm with the camera body included. You'd then be able to get something like a 70-300mm for £100 - £150 and no doubt everyone will recommend a 50mm (nifty fifty) for about £60 - £80!
Enjoy it mate... you'll soon be hooked!

Thanks for the great advice - I'll look into it. I take it as the numbers go up, the camera gets better...? 350d 400d d450 500d....? or maybe I'm wrong....?

Im a Manc too!! Depending on the brand the numbers mean different things.

With Canon, the shorter the number, the more pro it is

So you have the

x000 series, which is the lowest model
x00 series which is classed as an amateur model with plastic body (although very capable and probably the most popular)
x0 series, similar to x00 series, normally more capable at bursts and faster as well as being much better built with a magnesium body and two screens. Great cameras!

The new 7D is an exception, it is a crop sensor camera aimed at sports photographers etc.

The models above this, which are the 5D and 1D series, are full frame cameras, therefore alot bigger and it starts to get expensive! They have great low light performance and are considered good for wideangle, although you can get good results on crop sensors too now! They tend not to be chosen for zoom work as much because the sensor is full sized. With the crops you can multiply your lens zoom by 1.6x

So on a crop a 200mm lens will give you 320mm, on a full frame it would be the true 200mm

thanks for the advice.....I think most pple are recommending a canon...lots are saying a 440d or 450d is good place to start....
there are two main things i like to shoot...close up-superclose up that is and scenery. Which lens do I need which is cabable of handling both within reason?

The 17-85mm I use has a good macro but to shoot super close you need a dedicated macro lens really, it is a different ball game. An SLR allows you to do what you want by changing its equipment.

Scenery is quite easy, most lenses will be good with it. 17mm is ok, or anything below IMO
