Hello there my name is Mark and I have had a DSLR for just over a year now. I was happy taking photographs for the first three months in auto mode but then wondered why I had gone to this expense as the pictures did not look any better than my compact Lumix. So I took the bull by the horns so to speak and decided to try my hand in manual mode.

After a couple of weeks I was like a frightened child, I did not know where to turn, the instructional videos I had been watching on YouTube just seem to get me lost in a world of fog which eventually made me run for cover. The camera has not been switched on for a good 10 months since, that is until a couple of days ago. This time I am determined to try to at least grasp the basics of manual mode, so to help me on my quest I thought I would join a forum. I apologise in advance for what may seem to some of you some very silly questions.

There you are, I have said now, I feel a lot better for it.

Welcome to the forum.
Don't get hung up on using manual mode. Read up on programme mode, aperture priority and shutter priority.
I've been taking photos for nearly 40 years, and only use manual mode when I'm taking pictures of my grandkids using studio lights. The rest of the time in mainly in aperture priority mode, unless I specifically need a high shutter speed, then I use shutter priority.
Read up on the exposure triangle too.

Thank you Bob, sounds interesting, would that be the AV mode on my 600D?

Welcome from another Leicestershire amateur photographer.
Just have a play with settings, rather and enjoy.

Hi Mark, I hope you enjoy the forum :welcome:

One step at a time. Choose aperture priority and learn that mode only. If you swop around differing mode's you may get lost again.
AV mode will be just fine. Read up on it and then take some images, post them here for advice (don't worry about negative reviews, it happens ;)) You will get there, promise :)

Thank you for the advice everyone, aperture priority is firmly being looked into.(y)

Hi Mark, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing some of your images on the various forums."Enjoy".

Hi mark! Where abouts are you in Leicestershire? I'm just up from you...... I go to bradgate park to the folly to photograph sunrise [emoji560]

We are all learning, some are better than others, but this is not a competition. It's a hobby or interest to be enjoyed.
Have fun Mark !

Hi Mark and a warm welcome to TP.
Hope you enjoy yourself here :)
