Hi all,

I'm Liz, I'm 21 and live in Huddersfield, so ok that's the blind date bit over with. I have been interested in photography since the 90's with my miniature developing set as a child. Never did I imagine that I would be able to own my own camera, but yet here I am with my canon 1100D which ok is digital, but I think with moving with the times digitalisation was inevitable and has opened up a whole different range of media. As a novice I don't have a lot of experience and I am still very much a point and shoot type of photographer but obviously I hope to learn more about my camera and how to use it to its full potential.

I shall probably have lots of questions over the coming weeks, but one burning question I have is obviously I have the 1100D, which was recommended to me as a good starter camera, but since I've got it I've read some quite derogatory reviews of it and people almost pushing the 500/600D in its place. Is there any major reason for this? Or is the 1100D still a good starter camera and I shouldn't really worry about what I read.

Thanks for any hints and tips I might get along the way and obviously any welcomes,

Liz

Welcome to TP Liz.
I'm a Nikon person myself so don't know about Canon, but most digital cameras nowadays will do a lot more than people need,as a starter it will be plenty of camera to learn with.
Get over to basics and read some of the letters there and you will pick up a lot of tips.
Don't worry about changing you're camera, you will know when it will not do things you want and that you need a more advanced camera and thats when to ask here again what upgrade you need.

Till then ,get to know the camera inside out,and use it all the time as then you will be able to bring it up and shoot without thinking.
One small step for Liz,a huge step up from film.

Welcome Liz , nice to see another West Yorks person joining . I don't really know that much about the 1100D I just remember a couple of reviews stating that it was lacking a few fetures but on a whole did what it was supposed to do . It's a body that is aimed at a market of people who want more control but not so much that they would feel overwhelmed and never pick it up again . It seems like a very good starting point for yourself to start learning . I suggest that you get to know it inside and out and how to use it to it's full potential . Once you have done this you may then feel like you need to upgrade , just don't think that you need to upgrade because mr smith has this on his and I don't .

Welcome liz, another Nikon user here but I would get to know your current camera before moving on. You have come to the right place for advice there are plenty of helpful people on here!!

Hi liz
Nice to see young female Photographers from this region taking an interest, seems to be a few on these boards now.
Nothing wrong with your camera There is no reason at all why you should not get excellent quality Photographs. Stick with it until you "Know" that you need something different. By then there will be lots of other choices. There is very little it can't do.
In some ways the lenses you get are more important, as they can outlive several bodies if you chose well. But there again only buy when you need to, not just to scratch an itch.

Thanks everyone I do try keep the don't run before you can walk mentality I think I just wanted some reassurance when u read people being so negative over it. I'm still hugely impressed it and believe that with the correct lens settings and maybe some post processing I will still have some great quality pics. I just need to learn all that first! I shall post some of what I have produced already I've just been on night shift all week and need to turn my body clock back around for a 6am start on Monday first!

Thanks again,
Liz
