Hi all,

Just registered and normally I never go to the introductions forum but since this is one of the friendliest places on the internet I figured I'd give it a shot anyway!

Here mostly for advice on buying my first DSLR, and then lots of follow up help as I struggle in vain to figure the damn thing out! My point-and-shoot has finally broken after lots of rough and tumble, I thought it was dead two years ago when it got half ruined by sand in the Gobi. As well as getting camera advice I reckon I'll stick around and show some of my pics and look for some C&C, but unfortunately I'm very much a beginner and probably won't be able to add much to the community just yet, other than "wow I really like your pic".

I've been taking photos for a while now, mostly glorified tourist snaps and just shots of things I see in my daily life that I find interesting. In the past year made a Flickr, some of my images got invited to be licensed by Getty and now I'm starting to take it a little more seriously. It'll always remain a hobby as I'm nowhere near good enough to make a living from it, but it's becoming a more intensive hobby now rather than a take-a-pic-every-now-and-then one.

Anyway, that's enough, or rather probably too much, rambling. Hope to see you around the forums. Thanks for reading!

Chris.

Hi Chris, welcome to TP. You'll get lots of good advice on buying your first DSLR. As a lot of people will tell you, go to a camera shop and get a feel for the different models. The ergonomics of each brand is different, and the control layout vary from brand to brand. Most people go with either Nikon or Canon, although Sony are popular as well. Good luck with your purchase.

Hi chris and welcome to THE friendliest photgraphy forum on the net. Im new here too and everyone has been very welcoming and very helpful. So have fun and dont forget to let us see your photos.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

@feek: I've been looking at both Canon and Nikon, but as I'm strapped for cash (postgrad cleaned out my bank a/c and then some) I'll have to make sure I'm getting bang for my buck. Will be sure to check any recommendations out in the flesh before purchase, cheers!

@pepi1967: Good to know it's lived up to its word, look forward to getting more involved! I'll post some of my photos over the next few days in the relevant sections of the forum, in the meantime the link to my Flickr account is above if you just can't wait!

I'll be sure to look out for both of your shots!

i first thought "oohh, another Chinese" until i realised the other words are Hello in different languages. lol. i like what you did here :)

you could look at second hand deals to get best bang for buck. newer cameras have a premium on them and they really only have their video feature to distinguish them.

Hey carlh, thank for the welcome, great to find a place where I can get some help and hopefully improve a lot while I'm here. Glad you're finding the people useful and hopefully soon I can be too!

wuyanxu, 不好意思 ! 我是爱尔兰人 ,但是会说一点汉语如果你想中国 !认识你很高兴 !
I've never really been very interested in video, I think I only used the function two or three times on my last camera. So maybe getting a good used DSLR might be an idea. Thanks for the suggestion!
