hello and advice please - dropped camera in stream

Hi,

I'm not sure I'm posting in the right place but am looking for advice... I dropped my panasonic camera in a stream and it now won't turn on. I was thinking about sending it to these guys <Link Removed> but is it worth it or should I just accept that its done for? i'm so annoyed right now but really dont have the cash to buy a new camera....

How long ago did you drop it in the water. If there appears to be no obvious damage leave it in a warm room for about a week (with the batt & card compartments open) to dry out then think about repair if it will not work.
Before getting hooked into paying money I would phone Canon and ask if there is any chance that the camera can survive immersion.
 
Welcome aboard James and sorry that you found us in such bad circumstances.
I'm just going to move this out of the Welcome Forum and into the general Talk Photography area (with a tweaked title) where more people are likely to see it.

There may be someone with first hand experience of this who can add to to the advice you've already had from Dougie (or maybe make you feel a little bit better about it).

Sorry to hear about your misfortune - can happen to us all......

What is the model number of your camera? Panasonic make a wide variety of cameras and your choices will depend to some extent on which one it is.

If it's a £100 compact then it's unlikely that a repair would be viable or cost effective (that's if the 'drying out' trick doesn't work......)
 
Apart from the Canon bit, I would try Dougie's advice. Open as many doors as possible on the camera (not sure if the battery and card have separate doors) and leave the doors open. Put the camera in the airing cupboard for a while. Hope! After a week or so, put a charged battery back in and see if the camera will switch on. If it will and the lens will extend, leave the lens extended and take the battery out again to let the air get at the parts it probably couldn't reach before. Put it back in the airing cupboard for a while. Once it's as dry as you think it'll ever get, stich the battery and card in and test it.

I dropped a mobile phone down a loo once (don't ask), and after I think, 8 days, it worked perfectly again.

Why do you think I keep my mobile on a lanyard round my neck!!! (It dried out after a week or so in the airing cupboard with battery and SIM card removed.)

Definitely a :plusone: on this one. An airing cupboard if you've got one. Give it a gentle shake every day or so to move any water inside the case around and give it a chance to evaporate.

The new business, however, looks like it doesn't exist. Happy to be proved wrong but the website has every mark of an untrustworthy setup.

There are no contact details on the website at all. No phone number (despite it being mentioned in the text). No business details at all relating to the website name, thecamfix.

However there is a contact form. A contact form on a website run by a company called Productfeed UK LTD which operate under the brand 'Salesfeed'. A sales lead generation company.

If they are legit, they are doing a good job of looking non legit from my chair.
 
thats only if they are selling stuff directly from the site... also 0844 is a landline

Not strictly true. They are called "Non Geographic" numbers and can be routed anywhere, including to a mobile.

I've had a quick look around this website and it does look to be a front to me .... the following is taken from their privacy policy - I've highlighted the "bad" bits ...

Basically if you submit your personal details, they will sell them on to others, you will then be plagued by unsolicited telephone calls and spam email ... my advice is to avoid like the plague.
 
As was as putting in in a warm room also put it in a bag/box of rice (uncooked obviously!) The rice will draw out any water.

Take the battery and card out and leave all the flaps open. Leave it for as long as you can. ideally a week or more.
 
Yep. The expression "not with a bargepole" comes to mind with that link.

Let's hope that James comes back to respond, either to prove the cynics wrong or to confirm what some may be thinking.
I think we'd all prefer it to be the former, but if not there's still some good advice in here should anyone in the future be unfortunate to have the same problem.

Generally speaking it depends if it was powered up at the time - if it was it's probably fried... if it wasnt drying it out might recover it
(thats my experience of falling out of boats with a phone in my pocket anyway)

OK well since James hasn't returned to set us straight, link removed from the OP.
At worst it's spam, at best it's a dubious site that he's genuinely come across and doesn't deserve any more attention from here.

I'm going to leave the thread open for now though. There's still some useful information in here should anyone genuinely drop their camera in water and be searching for advice on what to do.

I know a guy who dropped his iphone out of his shirt pocket into a pot of hot coffee ! - that takes a speshul type of talent
 
I'd suggest caution with the rice, some makes can have dust/powder in the bags, adding this to a wet camera won't be good.

If you have a suspicion or concern about a particular incident or member, please report it so that staff can have a look into it.

Posting unsubstantiated allegations (even if they are thinly veiled) really isn't going to help anyone.
If you send an RTM along with any evidence you think there is to support your concern, then I can guarantee that it will be looked into.

More than happy to still look at it for you now :) but we do need some more details before we can act.
Even if it won't help you at this stage, it may benefit other members in the future.
Best done privately in the staffroom though and not on the open forum.
 
Buy new camera, fit idiot strap...(wrist strap/neck lanyard etc)
