My (not so) smart phone is going mental at me, telling me every 30 seconds that I have 4 new messages on here (would that I were so popular ).

Reset it? you have not said what os is on it but there is probably a way to clear the apps data for whchever app you are using.

Go to Edit Options on the menu, then, 2nd panel down Messaging & Notification

2d Option Default Thread Subscription Mode, Default Thread Subscription Mode: set it to Do Not Subscribe

There is normally nothing wrong with subscribe as the default - I like it!
That's not the problem here...
When I get 30+ alerts of a new post in a thread that was last posted into 10 hours earlier - something is definitely wrong with the system!
