What can you do when you get heat haze?

Anyone else encounter this?

Every looks fine in camera, but when editing some are soft?
Af is always moving back an forth.
This is not a camera/lens problem.

This has happened a few time this year to me. Cricket and football on a 3g pitch.

With the 3g pitch I moved up high, to shoot down on to the pitch. This helped.

Is it just a case of battling though it?

Its rare and usually on 3g .. not a lot you can do AFAIK ? ..Post Process is the life saver :)
 
Yer, they had just relayed several tonnes of the black chips on, plus has been about 30 degrees for the last week.

I seem to remember something about using a polariser or a 1 stop ND and slightly overexposing to compensate with the polariser
 
We'll it's good that you have noticed the heat haze as knowing the problem exists helps.

As you probably know heat haze is refracted light, usally caused by the sun (or something hot) heating up the air above the surface. As that rise into the cooler air above you start to see the refacted light due to the different densities.

Generally this is more noticeable with long lenses but it can be an issue with all lenses especially over 120/150.

The problem is also more noticable the further you are away from the subject as you are shooting and compressing more of the refracted light (heat waves).

There's actually not a lot you can do about it other that getting closer, moving to a less heated area etc but as I said the fact you know the problem exists at least gives you the chance of trying something different.

You should be able to get a drop-in filter for your 400 depending on what make it is ?
 
My 70-200 produced terrible pics when i firts got it.. removed the UV and all was well... wouldnt touch one with a barge pole on any of my lens...

drop in filters on a 400.. very expensive.. anyone use the cpl ..as gary says its the only one i know of..

Will it? I always thought that heat haze was the result of uneven refraction through heated air rising from a hot surface.
