Ok a really nieve question here but does any make of tripod head fit on any make of legs and vice versa?

Are the any exceptions?

Me either but there was some nice kit there :)

It's usually a good idea to go with the same brand of tripod (thought this is not carved in stone anywhere). It's just the compatibility that is easy on the user.

Sorry, I cant agree. You may like a great set of legs from one maker, yet you may not be able to find the head that you like from the same manufacturer.

The really good heads, such as Really right stuff, Gitzo, Arca et al will fit all legs, and it's worth mixing and matching if you can't afford the matching tripod, indeed, RRS and Arca, as far as I remember don't make 'pods, so you actually have to mix and match.

If you do end up buying a tripod with a 1/4" bush, you can buy a 1/4" - 3/8" adaptor quite cheaply (under a pound), from most camera shops.

What you CANT do, is buy a head with 1/4" thread, and fit it to a set of legs with a 3/8" stud. I suppose you could always tap out the head socket though.

If you're interested, Mifsuds have a set of Mint SLIK 340DX legs in their used column for only £45. These are near the top of the Slik range. http://www.mifsuds.com/usedpriceindexmz.htm

I would recommend Really Right Stuff for Heads and release plates etc. And Gitzo for the legs.
