I have been invited to give a demo of editing at a local event at which the organisers would like to allow visitors to edit items from tehir own cameras.

This leaves me with a slight quandary in case someone turns up with a DV or HDV tape camera. It's many years since I used one, and in those days I used a Quantel editor.

Is there any free software available for ingesting tape to file?

Also, now that Firewire is less likely to be present on a PC, is there any type of adaptor?
 
HDV Split is a good free application for HDV tapes but doesn't work with DV. Not used DV in over ten years myself, I would be surprised if anyone else still does. So long as the PC has a firewire port or a PCI card slot you can add a firewire card. Laptops with an Expresscard slot can be fitted with a Firewire adapter.
