Hi,
I am photographing a local cup final tomorrow morning and I only have a 50mm prime lens for my Nikon D90. Close ups will look good but obviously lack of zoom limits me if ball is the other side of the pitch. I could have access to a 24-70mm lens but don't know how much difference that will make. Any tips or advice?
Cheers!

Your going to find it difficult. Obviously close shots, maybe stick close to the goal for the action shots? Grab players before for portrait shots, then again immediately after the match, even as they are walking off to get a before and after.

I wouldn't even think you'll get much of the match play. I used to shoot with a 100-400 for Sunday league.

Any time I've done football or rugby I've used 100-400 too. The 50mm or even the 24-70 will struggle with anything but the closest of action.

I would work out where your lens is sharpest and prepare for a lot of croppng :-)

Good shout, I think I may stay on the same side line for the whole game meaning I will get some defending and some attacking for our team. Cropping isn't an issue so much as I am happy to do that.

By the posts for both rugby and football I've used my 24-105 on a crop body as a second combination. If Sunday league football you can stand quite close, so it's a good combination to get the action from corners as the players jump or the keeper tries to clear. You need to have your back to the corner being taken so you get the players faces. Obviously stand close to the line but away from the goal enought to suit your focal length.

As said though, mostly I shot 100-400 on a crop camera for the reach.

No friends you can borrow a more suitable lens from?

If your supporting a team, then just patrol the opposition goal mouth. The players will want to see close ups of the action. Your never going to get the midfield action, I wouldn't even try. Cropping just won't work, you'll honestly be surprised how small the players will look.

Don't forget if they score, call to the players, get them to celebrate in front of you and shoot. Don't celebrate, take the images. It's a mistake I made when I started photographing friends playing.

Yes it would be the Nikon one, should get a bit more zoom but feel I will most likely end up going with 50mm and using my legs
