Hi there,

I recently got a nikon d90 (and incredibly satisfied from the result/ price)

So here's the question, in the nikon menus I selected the NEF(RAW) image quality, ''hoping'' it would give me .RAW files so I could play with the curves upon opening it in photoshop...

However I tried taking them with nikon transfer (a little software that comes with the d90) and it gave me .NEF files which photoshop is unable to use or even open... :(

Is there a way to convert .nef files into .raw?

Thanks a lot !
Max.

NEF is raw, photoshop is the fault, maybe you need to update it or get a raw plug-in or something..

There's no such thing as .raw files - raw isn't a file format it's more like the lack of a file format and basically stores all the info available rather than processing it into a jpeg.
Canon produces .CR2 files and Nikon produces .NEF files - check that you installed all the drivers that came with your camera to be able to view/edit them.

thanks will try the plugins !

Depending on which version of Photoshop you have you may need to convert your .NEF files to .DNG files first (versions earlier than CS3 I think). DNG converter is available from Adobe website.

I am have recently turned to shooting in raw and what a revelation!

I use CS4 with a plug-in. I plug my SD card directly into my laptop and select the file I want. The image opens up in Camera Raw 5.2 , I tweak it then click Open Image and the image then opens up in CS4. Easy to use and brilliant results. Would never go back to jpeg.

You also can down load a windows codec to allow windows to dispaly the .nef files as thumbnails or in windows gallery.
