I have just seen this article - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-59894693

A couple of parts caught my attention -

"We're going to ask the Scottish government on this International Women's Day to make it clear that they accept that what happened to these people was a terrible miscarriage of justice and to apologise on behalf of the people of Scotland."

How do can you apologise for other people?

"We think it would be important if Scotland stands up and says, 'we accept what happened was wrong'.

No it wasn't. It would be wrong if the trials and torture happened now, but it wasn't then.

While I do agree that saying sorry in that situation is silly, personally I'm very glad to be woke, it's far better than ignorant.

Personally I think it's all just ridiculous, were some of the things that happened in the past wrong, yes by todays sensibilities but they were different times with different beliefs and sensibilities. Just how far back do you go the Early Modern period 1500's to mid 1700's, the middle ages 500's to 1500's, the Roman's 8th centaury BC TO 500's maybe even the stone age I'm pretty sure some really bad things have happened throughout human history. Rather than apologising and trying to change the past (which you can't) why don't people put the same effort into ensuring that these thing are not happening today and in the future.

Some time back something that looked a bit like a crocodile probably ate one of my ancestors that looked bit like a ferret. When do I get my apology?

And do I have to apologise to something that looks a bit like a shrimp for the fact that one of my ancestors that looked a bit like a ferret ate their ancestor the day before that thing that looked a bit like a crocodile ate it?

The BBC News link in Dave's post (OP) is about apologising for killing witches. It reminded me of a film I went to see as a young man .. 'Witchfinder General'.(1968) Based on the real-life Witchfinder General Mathew Hopkins who was appointed in 1646 by Oliver Cromwell during the English civil war. Goodness knows why I went. Probably because people said it was a great film.I don't like horror films or any involving gratuitous violence..like Straw Dogs ,Natural Born KIllers - A Clockwork Orange etc.and After watching it I wished I hadn't. It would probably be akin to watching a film about the Gestapo.

Which takes me nicely to the statue of Oliver Cromwell outside the House of Commons in London. Cromwell was an evil man - should his statue be torn down?

To be brutally honest I do think the "Woke" community needs to shut up, remember the fury about 15 months ago surrounding the BBC's cancellation of a certain Fawlty Towers episode just because the left spat its dummy out about the N word? Uttered by the Major Gowen character? Even John Cleese himself said banning the whole episode was PC gone mad!

Unfortunately the word is now used as a term of insult by those on the political right against those whose opinions they do not like. There are few on here who use it as such, but I believe they are in the minority, fortunately.

I'd consider myself somewhere to the left of "Citizen Smith" but...

I use the word to describe people who seem to think that everyone else is wrong and knows "nout about 'out".

Witches of Wales ?? :D

Seems the witches in Wales were benevolent and compassionate. I've always found the people of South Wales, in particular, warm-hearted and friendly and what a wonderful anthem.:)

The numbers are a matter for debate, some historians putting the total number of witch killings in Europe as low as 20,000 and others as high as 60,000. The main problem is that many of the actual records have been lost over the centuries and assessments rely on secondary sources.

There’s a phrase that goes something like, “those who forget their history are bound to repeat it.” Shouldn’t the events in the distant past be better used as a reminder of what could happen again rather that trying to erase them from public memory?

The BBC edited out the N word scene in 2013 with Cleese's approval. And it was never "banned". UKTV just decided to not stream it anymore.

But that didn't stop the snowflakes on the right having tantrums about it.

His interviews of Scottish political party leaders at election time, which I have been surprised they are willing to subject themselves to, are some of the funniest things I've seen.

I've seen this one before, but well worth a second watch :-)
 
What I don't understand is the current trend of those, who have no connection with the those actually involved in an event, seemingly getting very upset about it because it doesn't conform to their particular belief system.

This being a perfect example.

Mark Labbett, the former Countdown numbers whizz was a guest contestant on the hit quiz show, wearing a sparkly red dress. Watching the pre-recorded episode from home, 'The Beast' shared a tweet about the 61-year-old.

Labbett joked: "I don’t know what is more impressive about @carolvorders, her intellect or her more tangible assets #superstar #BeatTheChasers." Vorderman, apparently took it good spirit, her reply was "You beast you."

So we have a jokey exchange of texts between two adults which has nothing to do with any third party.

However a few fans of the show weren't too impressed by the remark, with some slamming the Chaser as being 'creepy'. One user said: "Bit creepy!" Echoing the shock, another wrote: "Bit inappropriate."
A third said: "Really? This is 2022 not 1972! A bit creepy and sexist." While another added: "Bit weird."

Why do any of the above think they have the right to comment/pass judgement on an exchange of texts between two people who they do not know, have never met and probably never will.
