Only just over 2 weeks until I leave for the states and I think I've come to a final decision on the glass I'm going to get out there...

70-200 L f4 @ $530
17-40 L f4 @ $600

then, over the next couple of years I'll hopefully be able to add to that with a 1.4 or 2x TC, flash and a 300 L IS f4 @ $1100.

What are your thought? Have I made the right decision for an initial budget of $1000-1100 and planned additions for the future?
(by the way, currently only got 30d, kit lens, nifty 50, manfrotto tripod and decent lowepro computrekker)

Just bought the 17-40 myself, should arrive tomorrow, looks awesome.

Looks like a good set of lenses as you have the wide angle of the 17-40 mixed with the high zoom capabilitis of the 70-40.

These are the two lenses i'd get (and am already halfway there lol).

Good choices I'd say!

I used the 17-40 on the 20D for nearly all my landscapes when I was in the USA last year and came back with plenty of shots I'm really pleased with. I was pleased with it on the 20D and I'm even more pleased with it on the 5D. Can't see you regretting that purchase.

The 70-200 f4 is a good lens in any light (except very low because it is only f4) but in good light it really delivers the 'L' lens wow factor... so I'd guess you will like that one too :)

Only downside I see is you will want something better for a walk about lens once you have these two so expect the spending bug to continue!

$530 for the 70-200 is about £260 at current rates and you can get it brand new here for £280 with the current cashback deals. Personally I think an extra £20 is more than worth it for the peace of mind of a UK sourced one and not having to worry about tax and import duty from the US.

Cheers. Do you not think these will do me for walk around lenses then? Which other would you throw in to the mix?? He says all of a dither again about the choice... :bonk:

I wont have to worry about that as I'll be living over there for the next 3 years!! I know they've come down a lot in price, but the best i've seen it at is £348 in warehouseexpress. Where have you seen it for 280??

You don't have the range for walk about with either of those - unless you like all wide shots or all close ups. You can try your kit lens at 18-40 now to see what the limits are. I was using a Tamron 28-75 as my walk round lens but now have the 24-105 IS. 24-105 was good on the 20D but is perfect on the 5D

Picking lenses is never easy :)

Yeah, I'm with RobertP on this. I have both of those lenses (although I have the 70-200 IS model) and I do miss having a solid single walk about. I'm planning to add the 24-105 IS as soon as I can and I think I'll be pretty much there.
