I recently bought a Vivitar 28-210mm AF lens from Ebay for £45 but then i came across another Vivitar 28-210mm AF lens and it sold for £14 have i been ripped off or has someone just got a great deal with the £14... i have no idea how much Vivitar 28-210mm AF lens normally cost.

Well I just saw one on eBay go for £7.16, but it depends on the fitting.

Id say you paid over the odds, but I wouldn't say you've been "ripped off", you thought it was a decent price and paid it, as long as your happy with the lens then it's all good. I find it's best to buy then never look for the same lens again as you'll always find one cheaper!

Sound advise for any consumer spend I'd say.

Have you been ripped off, nah, not at all. Your lens is much better than all the rest of them, just go out and see how much better.;)

Also you bought at a price you were prepared to pay, so you can't have been ripped off.

What day did you buy it?
Thursday and Sunday are the most expensive days on Ebay.

You chose to buy it / bid on it!

Whenever I'm bidding on something on Ebay I research what completed listings have gone for so I know when I should start to think about stopping bidding - unless its one of those things that are so rare you buy at any price.

Why's that then? Pension day Thursday?

A regular seller told me, it's the only days her auctions finish on now.
I think because people are out on the town friday and saturday nights and too busy getting on with the week mon/tue/thu.
I think a lot of people get paid thursdays too.

Consider the workers in the fields. You agreed to this price so the onus is on you. Nobody forced you to buy it.

I would doubt you could buy it new (haven't Vivitar gone under?). What does it matter though?

For your peace of mind lets just say it would cost you £100, so wow! you got a bargain! Well done you.

You have no idea what they normally sell for but you pressed the "bid now" button, only after buying it do you start to question how much you paid for it?

All I can say is thank goodness you are not in charge of my family finances!

Research any major purchases before you buy, especially on ebay! I've seen well used second hand lenses go on ebay for pretty much the new price with the postage added and yet people get into the old buying frenzy and still buy them. :cuckoo:

Take some pictures with it and let us see - then we'll tell you ;-)

Ebay is curse like that. You look at it and you think 'ooh ah, thats nice!' Then once the bids in you start getting the knowing doubt. It's only afterwords that you find the one or two posts on forums where someone has said they got it for £10. I bought a couple Nikon flashes and it's been bugging me all week whilst I wait for them. Mind you, if you do have any doubts, just stick it back on with a reserve of what you paid for it. Leave it a while though until the £15 one comes of the completed listings list!

When i was selling stuff on ebay, i find the best time to get things to finish is between 6-8pm on a Sunday. Its amazing how much you can sell two identical things for if you finished one on say a friday night and one on a sunday.

Vivitar never actually ever made a lens, they simply employed other lens manufacturers to make lenses for them. Whether your lens is good or bad and worth the money you paid can very much depend on who made it. The clue is in the first two digits of the serial number : (sorry it's a bit small but forum guidelines and all that....)

thanks for the info mate... good info... how did you come across this..

I have a Yashica mount Vivitar 70-150mm that goes way back to the days when I dabbled in B&W film photography. I happened to mention this lens during a discussion on another forum and somebody came up with that information. Below is a snap I took recently from my bedroom window with the lens fitted to a 400D. Obviously both the metering and the focusing had to carried out manually which, at least are far as the focusing is concerned, was not that easy on a 400D, but I think the shot shows that the optics aren't half bad. According to the list, my lens was made by Tokina.
