No doubt about it, these film cameras are good examples of top quality engineering. A joy to look at, as well as to use.

I've seen pictures of a Bronica S2a just recently, with all its outer casing cut off.
It looked like the contents of a dozen pocket watches...:gag:

What is the purpose of the winder handle on the back..?

You place the film in preload position insert it then wind the film and it stops on frame one ready to go.

There's a dark slide missing as well

They all look similar, (the box 6x6's) but there are subtle differences in operation.
I like the old Bronica, the winder is on the body.:)

The winder for taking photos is on the Hasselblad body too but intially you load the films on magazines first, it's a little quicker when you change backs having a mag that's preloaded if you're lucky to have more than one that is

lol, methinks joxby might already know....

No I don't, I've never used a 500 series Blad with a film back, used a 500/501/503 with a leaf back in studio, but never film...:(

I need a new box 6x6, I've been considering a 500CM but I'm getting less and less impressed by the mechanics and the cost of CZ glass for them.
I reckon I'm not too bothered about leaf shutter lenses t'b fair, focal plane is good enough for me, I don't want to pay the extra for leaf shutter.
No idea why there needs to be a winder on the back itself, except that that's how they are designed, there doesn't appear to be any advantage over a back that winds on, on camera, but I dunno..

The reason for the winder on the back Joxers, is that you use it to wind the film on to the starting point - frame 1. You can do that with any number of mag backs so you're good to go as soon as you fit any back to the camera.

Victor knew what he was at! ;)

Remind me never to try to take that apart then!

Joxby you just have to get one. I don't honestly care if I only use mine a couple of times a year David is right, it's just sheer camera porn. :)

I'd love a wider angle for mine but digi upgrades are next on the agenda unless the lottery tickets come up at work.

What's next then Jox, EC or S series? Then you can show those Hasselblad peeps what close focussing is.

I'm with ya CT, I can't see the advantage of winding to frame 1 on the back v winding to frame 1 on the body, its only a couple of seconds.
On the other hand, there's no harm in it..:)
The Bronica, you load the film carrier and put that into the back, you only wind to frame 1 when the back is mounted on the body.

OO noo, its a confidence trick, its all opinions with no factual basis....

I don't think I want a Hasselblad,, but I do want a box of that ilk..

I dunno, they're quite old now, been plotting for while though.
Fontmosses SQ-am, Ekimenos SQ-A went in 2 shakes of a lambs tail, the RB, all are tempting.....but not.....

The SQs all have a winder on the mag too.

Old but pretty. If I had the spare cash I'd buy one just to have it look nice on my desk. SQs aren't the prettiest of cameras (although no uglier than RB/RZs) but they're nice to use.

I'm wondering if there is anywhere around that knows how to service Bronicas so that I can ensure mine keeps going.

I found this place Kev http://www.thecameracentre.com/ I have not used them but they do mention Bronica as a make they cover.

Bronicas are great I am starting to use my SQ-Ai more and more, the glass is very good and cheap to when compared to the Hasselblad ones.

However I am getting very close to buying a Haselblad SWC/M, don't know why  just have always lusted after one

Bronica's are great value for money, there isn't the distance between them and Hasselblads, that used price levels suggest.
Its that old game of diminishing returns I s'pose.
I'm quite happy to use any Bronica or Nikkor glass knowing in all likelihood, I won't be able to tell it from CZ most of the time..:)

You are out to make me feel bad, aren't you? I have just sold my Broni and bought a Hassy.

I have to say, the thing weighs like a ton, especially with the 150 lens. I wil be sight, waiving a lightmeter and managing a hassy while the rest family pulling at my coat tail. I will only attempt landscape for the first few rolls; at least the darned trees dont decide to walk away half way through my attempt.

I am now thinking of using the hassy glasses on a mamiya 645 body - it'll be far more usable and light.

The Mamiya 6 is far more convenient; no wonder its so much in demand

Ujjwal

OO noo, If you're offering them for nothing, I'll take the Hassy pls....:D

If I've got to pay for it, I'll take the Bronny...

Rangefinders have their limitations, a small price for convenience though.

Oh dear! :( Wrong Hassy I suspect, I guess it's the motor adding the weight. Shoulda gone for a 500C or CM.

CT; it is a CM :)

I knew the camera is heavy ( built like a tank etc); but in flesh, the weight still surprised me, especially with the 150 mm lens. The 80 mm is not bad. I wonder whether the 50 mm will be even lighter?

The other thing that surprised me was that the focussing screen has no centre-split prism. Never having used one before, it'll take some time to get used to. ( Surprisingly, there is a arsenal made split prism screen available for less than 20 quids ( Blasphemy, I know....).

I was also toying with the idea of a prism ( either the Hassy metered one - very expensive, a Kiev metered - cheap and cheerful or a non metered 45 degree NC.) But they will all add weight.

As I said, the Mamiya 6 is far easier to carry. But I am hoping the lens quality will make lugging the weight around worthwhile for a hassy.;)

sod the IQ, the dozens of gorgeous girls that flock to sound of the shutter make the weight worhtwhile

Oh right - for some reason I thought you'd bought one with a motor - must be someone else.

I'm surprised you find the blad heavy though, although the 150mm lens is no doubt a factor, but don't get an RB67 then! :D

A lot of people opt for a split prism screen, they're not the easiest cameras to focus. The RB67 seems to snap in and out of focus much more precisely.

The advantage of a prism like the PME 3 is that it gives a large magnified view of the screen so it does aid focusing, and being a 45 degree prism you can use it easily at chest height - unlike the 90 degree ones which you have to lift to eye level.
