I am going back to south lakes wild animal park soon for the first time since i took up photography.

if you like wild animals its a great place to visit.

however I am very tempted to leave my camera behind despite tehre being oportunity for some great shots.

I enjoy interacting with the animals tehre and dont want the photo taking to take over the trip and spoiling the main reason for my visit.

however there are some GREAT photo oportunities...

help...

Take your camera, just because you have it, doesnt mean you have to use it... And you will kick yourself when you see a missed oppertunity !

I wouldn't be able to go there without my camera.

Last time I went was in winter and I was there for the gates opening. There was no-one but me in the Lemur area and I couldn't believe how trusting they were.
Ended up with one sat on my backpack at one point. I have to say I was happy when it jumped off though, there are signs all over the place saying they bite!!

I would take the camera, but you are right sometimes you just have to enjoy the times and not spend all your time looking through a viewfinder

Gets to the point now where I tend to take my camera out everywhere I go. I don't mean to the shops for a pint of milk, getting some uber DOF on the warburtons toastie loafs

But if I'm going somewhere of value, i tend to just stick the bag in the car so it's there.

I know what you mean about the milk. It's a swine trying to get the lighting right in the chiller cabinet

Seriously though there have been a couple of occasions where I have kicked myself for not having the camera with me.

Cheers,

Nigel

I must say that when I'm shooting Polo as official tog, I don't actually get to see the game as such as it gets very compartmentalised through the viewfinder.

I'm going this weekend but not in an official capacity. I'll still take my camera but, as the pressure will be off, I'm looking forward to relaxing and watching some of the games.

I tend to take my camera everywhere... I've been met with limited understanding from my peer group at school, when i see something and whip a camera out of my bag...

I don't think it ruins the experience, you don't have to use it.

i've been to a couple of concerts and regretted taking a camera as I spent more time trying to get a good shot than I did listening to the band, when I got home they were all rubbish so I won't do it again unless i'm right at the front

I took my camera to an event where we were staying overnight, I only took the camera to walk off the hangover in the morning. Problem was everyone was dressed up and there was no tog there to take pics of everyone in their dinner suits and evening dresses.

People were getting upset about it and a few asked if I had my kit, so off I went to get it, got hundreds of fabulous photos and everyone was very chuffed with them.

But I missed the fun of the event due to seeing it from behind the camera :(

Being escorted out of Tesco's by security for moving the the bottles around to get a good composition.

Only when I haven't got my camera with me and have a messed the op' of a good shot!!

It's caused a few 'discussions' with the wife. Instead of taking in the ambience of where we are, I stand there taking photos and the wife ends up going round on her own with me following behind clicking away, only for her to moan about it later. If I hadn't taken any photos she would then moan that we have no record of our visit......can never win.

I usually always kick my self when I dont have my camera and come across a good shot....

Last night I had the delight of having to go into work at 2am to reboot a server, on the way back I saw a badger running down the road (was running faster than my bicycle) and then a fox crossed the road infront of the badger, if I had my camera and stopped I may have got a nice urban shot.. alas I didnt, but then again I didnt think about taking it with me lol.

I stopped using a camera when in a cathedral in Spain many years ago - a funeral was going on, I was not using my camera out of respect (I have no religous beliefs) when a coach-load of tourists came in, flashing away for 20 minutes then walked out - I doubt that a single one noticed that a loved one was being said goodbye to.
20 years later I do now use a camera again, but it is really important to feel what is happening around you.
Taking in the moment can be as important as taking a picture at times...
