Has anyone got a guide to remove the hotshoe from a 50d?

I removed the plates but the pins are stuck. I don't want to break the plastic cover on top near the built in flash. Any ideas please?

Another member of the curious club here I can think of reasons to want to add a hotshoe... but not remove it - if you simply want to prevent the hotshoe accidentally shorting on something - I'm sure you could fashion an appropriate insulated insert...
