Hard drives near speakers

I recently bought 2 Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard dives. I swap these over once a week, keeping one in another location. Recently I have left one on top of a speaker and it has appeared to have failed (it locks windows as soon as it is plugged in).

My question is, is it safe to keep hard drives next to or on top of, as it was in my case, a speaker.?

Thanks

Doubt the speaker had anything to do with it. It does match my experience of WD hard drives in the past. Samsung is the only brand that has never let me down (so far).

I dont think that is a problem. Although it was a while since I learned my technical knowledge, harddrives have a pretty high tolerance of magnetic fields, and also I believe they have their own magnets inside anyway.

i was always told not to put HDD's next to speakers due to the magnets, as they can wipe or corrupt the data.

All I would say is - if you have the choice of putting your hard drive next to a speaker, or not next to a speaker. I'd opt for not next to a speaker. :)

It's not impossible that the constant vibration from the speaker (if being used) has caused damage to the HD - HDD's are the biggest pain in the ass when it comes to reliability.... a great piece of software for constantly monitoring the reliability of your drives is Hard Drive Inspector...

Cheers guys ...yes I didn't think ...bit late in the day now anyway but I'd like to know out of interest if nothing else. Drives only a cpl of months old. I will not be keeping any others near or on top of speakers just in case.

I hope you're going to RMA it as faulty with the manufacturer, or get it swapped out by the seller, and not just write it off?

.... and it could be the USB caddy that's faulty, not the drive... but don't open the WD external cases, it voids your warranty if you do. The whole shebang has to be swapped out, not just the drive.

most modern speakers are magnetically shielded these days..

this is true, however I still wouldnt have any HDD's next to my old school technics, they tore apart my old crt :(
