Hard drives disconnecting

Hi chaps,

I'm having a bit of trouble with two of my hard drives randomly disconnecting.

All is fine if I reboot and, the drives appear again, these are relatively new drives so I don't think it's a hard drive problem.

Also having issues with W7 64bit restarting for no reason, I'm now thinking the two might be related.

I've tried new sata cables but, it makes no difference.

Also scanned all drives with Adaware, Malwarebytes and, Avast, no problems.

Used CCleaner to clean up the registry.

Does anyone have any ideas.

a couple of ideas to start off with..

have you checked nothing is overheating?

have you installed all the latest drivers for your mainboard?

Tried removing and reseating the memory?

Go to control panel>system>system protection>advanced tab >start up and recovery settings button and untick automatically restart. next time it crashes make a note of the BSOD code and put it in google to see if you get any clues to the problem.

Tried all of those, not been quick enough to catch the BSOD so far, being random, I never know when it's going to shut down next.

I don't know if it's relevant but, I also can't set my PC to go into standby any more, just crashes it instantly.

Don't you just love computers :(
 
You will not see the BSOD unless you change that setting in control panel to turn off auto restart.

Might be worth checking to see if there is a bios update.

Is the power supply a good one?
 
Had a similar problem with adding new hard drives when the power supply could not handle them. I would try a bigger one and see if that fixes the issue or try to disconnect other peripherals and see if this cures the problem by freeing up power for the new hard drives.

Ok, changed that setting, waiting for it to happen again now.

bios is up to date and, power supply is good.

Thanks Michael,

Although the drives are newish, I have always had three drives in the PC so, not as if there is any more power being used since this started happening.
 
What about clearing the CMOS and seeing if that does the trick?

I take it your clock on the PC stays correct?
 
Good thinking Mike, that would normally be one of the first things I would do but, totally forgot about it this time.
