I thought i would buy another external hard drive and purchased a 2.5 inch SATA HD Hard Drive Disk External Enclosure HDD. Thinking this was similar to what i have previously bought it seems that this little box isnt what i thought it was. Could someone enlighten me as to what it is and how it is used.

This is the actual one that i purchased.

Many thanks

Its a hard drive enclosure as you say, so whats the problem?
What did you think it was? and why isnt it?

I thought i could use it by connecting it to my laptop or desktop to store files on. when it is plugged in to either of them neither recognise it when i go to transfer files from my C drive to it. There is an LED light on the case that comes on when it is connected to either machine when connected via a USB cable?

What you need to go in that is an actual 2.5" SATA hard drive, something like this... http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...achi+SATA2+Laptop+Drive+2.5"+?productId=34358

cheers for the reply, i have opened the unit up and what you have linked to, is actually already inside the unit. I should have said in my O P is that the casing is the same as the one i purchased but it is already fitted out with the hard drive. I actually paid £40 for it. I have read that my PC's might not be compatible with SATA if my PC's use IDE and to be honest I have not got a clue what I have fitted on my PC's

It might be better if you posted in
Computers, Websites and Other Technology rather than OOF. :)

right click on my computer, manage, disk management.
then you will have a list of drives, C: is probably 0 and then cd drives etc. you should see your new drive.
If it is there you will probably need to create a new partition, if not then you have driver / hardware issues.

It's a standard USB conection so should be seen automatically. When you plug it in it should be seen in my computer.

Yup, the drive connects via usb, it's only the interface in the enclosure that's SATA

Cheers fezzr and others you have been a great help. I will try what you have said fezzr, and if i cant get it to work i will go and buy another one that i know i can just plug it in and it works. I am not very good with computers and do not like to delve to deep into the settings in case i screw something up.
