I have salvaged a Sata 3GBs 500gb hard drive from a non working computer, I currently have it in a USB2 enclosure. Would it be worth my while upgrading to a USB3 would transfer data faster? Might seem a silly question, may even be silly, but is the Sata drive already at max transfer with usb2. I hope that makes sense

Steve

A USB3 enclosure will be a lot faster than a USB 2 one with a SATA drive

Thanks John will have look on Amazon for a new one.

Is your drive Sata3 (which is 6Gbs) or a 3Gbs drive (which is Sata2)? If the former then I think a Sata3 enclosure would be the best option. If the drive is Sata2 then I'm not sure a Sata3 enclosure will make the transfer quicker.

I have bought several of these enclosures from Amazon both USB2 and USB3 and find them very reliable:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumvision-E...617&sr=8-12&keywords=sumvision+HDD+ENCLOSURES

Some cheaper ones I tried simply kept disconnecting.

The only mod I made to them was to affix the PSU to them semi-permanently using 4 large double-sided foam sticky tape in order not to have cables snaking everywhere.

In action they have so far proved very reliable.

I take it that your laptop/computer has a spare USB3 port to connect the external drive to?

Sorry Dave, didnt spot your post until today.
Its a Sata2 Drive, well its 3gbs so assuming Sata2, and its from a laptop. So are you saying I may as well just stick with the USB enclosure?

Steve

Might as well go USB3, about the same price these days.

Thanks Mike, thing is I have already got a USB2 enclosure so is it worth upgrading to a USB3 with a sata2 drive

It was me, hence the mod edit to my post.

Apparently offering something for nothing, in a thread specifically about that something, is wrong.
Ahh I see. I'm not sure what rule you broke but it does seem a little pedantic but then I'm not a mod :)

In that case, I would save my pennies:p
