I've seen a few people using these and they look very good...

How good are they in practise?

Do you use one? If so, which one? Where did you get it from and why do you use it?

I find that sometimes the neck strap gets in the way, and can be quite awkward.

I really don't wanna buy one only for it to snap and I drop my gear. :shake:
 
I prefer handstraps in general and have them on all my bodies, but on the D300 I have both that and a Op/Tech Pro. The handstrap is just a cheapy one from Ebay, but it takes the weight of the D300/MB10 grip and the 70-200 VR without any drama.
 
If you have a battery grip on you 450D, then the canon hand strap will fit and will not snap.

As to how useful they are I guess that's a personal thing, I got a canon one and to be honest I don't use it that often. I think it depend on what type of photography you do,for example in street togging I think they are more discrete as you can keep the camera down by your side while walking about.

I got mine via ebay and I think it was under a tenner all in.
 
I never knew Canon made them. What's the model number?
 
I would have one in a second if they weren't so damned expensive.
Not sure I trust the 3rd party ones I've seen - FITP which one have you got for the D300?
 
Use the Canon E1 handstrap with the OpTech strap - which can be disconnected if not required. Much prefer the handstrap as, for me, I find it a much more comfortable way of holding the camera - as it is the handstrap and the back of your hand that is taking the weight of the camera not your fingers gripping the body. Have used one now for many years with no issues at all and do recommend you try it.

What's the OpTech strap?
 
I use the Canon hand strap.
I hang my 40D +grip, 120-300mm F2.8, 550EX and sometimes my sidekick off my hand with this combo attached. Gets a bit uncomfortable after a while but that is largely down to the fact I'm hanging a lot of weight off it - but there is no chance of it snapping or slipping.

I also hang an optec strap off my lens

Define getting in the way and awkward?

I have both for my D300, a cheapy hand strap and a TP optech neck strap. The hand strap is fine and does the job, but cumbersome if you have both fitted at once. I have found the happy medium to be to have the neck strap on, so I can throw it over my shoulder, but when using camera on a tripod, or in studio, I unclip the centre [neck] part of it and fasten the two loose ends together, making things so much more manageable.
 
I use both an Optec kneck strap and a Canon E1 handstrap on my 1D, works brilliantly and I really like the handstrap. Have to say that I wish the 5D had mounts for a handstrap (without requiring a battery grip).
 
I got a cheapo ebay-jobby which has served me very well, although the stitching is starting to break now. Perfect for my D40 + 18-200, but if I moved up to more expensive equipment I´d fork out for a better one. Personally I hate having the camera around my neck.

Two benefits for me
One, you can relax your hand while carrying the camera. If I am out shooting the ability to loosen or totally release my grip on the camera knowing it will not fall are a huge bonus.

Two, Stability. When shooting on a monopod or tripod with a long lens I find the camera feels more 'connected' to me. Difficult to describe well but it definitly improves my subject tracking.

one, even with a strap i wouldnt loosen my grip as i dont have faith in them as there been a few posts on other sites of the grips failing. I just swap hands when i walking between places so hand doesnt start cramping etc.

two, never use a monopod so that another benefit that doesnt work for me.
 
When I am going to be holding the camera "in hand" for any length of time I simply wrap the neck strap around my wrist one more time. It then acts as a hand strap.

I'd not relish always having to keep the camera in my hand by not having the option of the neck strap.

That said I do tend to return the camera to my trusty Crumpler after a sequence of shots.
