ok im looking at buying a halo flash for doing portraits , i really AM interested in close up( like portraits.) is a halo flash any good for this type of photography?

What's a halo flash? Do you mean a ring flash? If so, then like any piece of equipment, it is perfect for that kind of photography, if it gives you the results you want. A ring flash used as the main light source gives a very distinct look. Just do a search for images online taken with it and you'll get an idea of what it does.
