Halina 35x

As I mentioned on another thread I have come by a Halina 35X - this has been stored in a loft for about 15 years .

It seems to be fully functional and i'm going to run a roll of film through it in due course however i do have a couple of queeries

a) The control rings on the lens which do shutter speed, focus, and aperture seem pretty stiff (they do turn) , is that usual or is that a result of the lack of use ? and

b) it seems to have a hot shoe and a weird looking cubiular flash with a little lead - but theres no socket on the camera to connect that too - anyone shed any light on that ?

pretty sure that the 35x has a "coldshoe" rather than hotshoe - no electrical contact, just something to mount things on. the PC cable on the flash should fit onto the PC sync connector on the lens iirc...

a quick squizz through ebay listings seems to confirm that most the ones on sale have either stiffened up or seized solid - at a guess it'd be the grease/oil used at assembly time that's dried out and set...

Cheers mark , thats great - I think i won't bother with the flash. It will be interesting to see what results i get from it ( the only question now is whether to go seeking a poundshop film or to just risk one of the bulk pack of provia thats languishing in the fridge )

I've not shot serious film for yonks and yonks - i use digital for any paid for work, and also for all my serious photo trips (that isnt likely to ever change)

However I like playing with old cameras, for the interest in actually handling them and taking them to bits, learning how they work etc (rather like some petrol heads prefer working on their classic car to actually driving it) - as i mentioned the otherday i also have a completely borked rolleicord which is getting turned into a clock and desk ornament

Like matt was saying on the other thread I have limited interest in using a newish film camera which is essentially just a DSLR which shoots film( I have an eos 30 and and eos 3 - but they only ever get used if i need to do sothing too hazrdous or dirty to use a dslr) , my interest in film rests on things like the halina, the old TLR cameras,and various junk shop bargains - although i do also quite like using the OM10 for the pure joy of the lightness and clarity of the viewfinder

Much the same here pete, right down to the same 2 film EOS's - though I'll admit, the EOS3 is still worth its corn for the odd gig I get shooting bands who insist on film (that old "keeping it real" thing that I don't quite understand, but am happy to pander to...)

I've also got a soft spot for the Holga toy cameras - especially the pinhole panoramic one - but i've never really got into the TLR's for some reason. Much prefer the Bronny

lol - Ive got one of those pinholes as well - I bought it as a potential helga two while helga was on her magical mystery tour of devon sorting offices

I also used to have an Eos5 - but that came to grief while I was using it for one of my dafter projects , namely trying to take close up shots of waterfowl by mounting it on a remote control boat (the 5 has a really quiet shutter) - it worked fine right up to the point that an irate coot decided it was a predator getting too close to her babies and attacked it, causing the boat to capsize

I must have missed the other 'thread', but Halina 35x, wow!! how nostalgic.

This was my first 35mm camera, bought on 'the weekly' from my Mum's Kays Catalogue, back in the late 1950's (or very early 1960's), and my first introduction to photography.

I went on to buy range finder for it, which fitted into the 'flash shoe', so I didn't have to guess the distance when setting the lens.

From there I progressed to doing my own developing and printing, which I used to do in the bathroom, with a board placed over the bath.

I still have some of those early home produced prints.

Fond memories indeed.

I had one of these - took it apart to try to fix the stiff focus ring, but just ended up bricking it! Pretty paperweight, now.
