Yes
I bought a nifty 50 last Saturday, and whilst using the camera earlier, a slip the hand and the camera landed lens down on the tarmac. It fell apart, I've got it back together and it's working, just. There's definitely some resistance when focusing and the inside of the lens is marked. My camera looks beaten now too.

I really enjoy using the lens, as a newbie it really puts a smile on my face. But, what would your opinions be about a new lens. Should I buy the same again, or opt for something else?

Going to go and sob some more.

It was you that broke it lol no fault in the lens.

Uh, when did I blame the lens? Learn to read, then if you're feeling helpful, feel free to post something else.

What sort of photos do you like taking ?

The nifty is a superb lens.

Since I've just started, anything. Tonight, before I broke my lens, I was taking some of various objects, then out on a motorway bridge. I'm trying everything I can, just to see if it works.

Liam I can read perfectly well but thanks for your concern!

The reason I said what I did was because you say the 50mm put a smile on your face and you enjoy using it... Why change the lens? It wasn't the 50s fault it broke so if you enjoy it that much buy it again... If it was a manufacturers fault it broke then be put off buying the same lens again.

In all honesty im not a fan of your response and strongly recommend you learn a little respect.

I'm not concerned.

If you'd have typed in the first reply, what you've typed in this one, I wouldn't have had an issue. But, you never. Your reply reads as if my comment is blaming the lens in some way. I apologise if you feel I've disrespected you, Sir, but I'd bet you would read your own reply in the same way as i did, if somebody else had of typed it. I also would expect you to be annoyed if you asked for some advice, but received as seemingly nasty remark. Albeit not meant the way you put it across.

My advice is if you like the lens and have a use for it then get it again.

Thanks, think I will. I'll just order it online this time, instead of being ripped off my Jessops. My lack of patience one of my many flaws.

I did the same thing a few years ago,a Nikon 18-35mm used it a lot,i was going to replace it as soon i could, never did.

Dont wait to long if you really like the lens,or you will end up like me never replaceing it :)

For the money you won't do better than the cheap and cheerful Nifty fifty. I'd replace with another in your situation.

I'll do that then, I woke up this morning still annoyed. Imagine if it was an expensive lens? I'd be suicidal.

Use the camera strap next time!

As far as your next lens choice goes, you have the whole EOS range to explore... if you wanted to of course.

I'll be doing just that from now on, such a stupid little mistake. :(

Was it wide enought for you? The 35mm f/1.8 is also a cracking lens.

Sorry, just saw you are using Canon, not sure if they make such a lens.

The 50mm is awesome, just get another one.

Amazon are doing it for £77 this morning http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod83.html

If you have a serious lack of patience and want one now, it's only £10 more to purchase from Jessops, so not a huge amount extra for getting it now...

Hope you get one sorted out...

If you don't like the orig. strap they sell diff styles. They have one that runs along the side of your camera and there's just enough room to fit your hand in. I like that option rather then wrapping my hand in the regular strap.

Some brilliant advice and suggestions.
Thanks guys.

Ah thats weak! Im a nikon man myself but thought the would have done a 35mm.

My advice is to sell up and get a nikon :-P

Although, not liking this once so much. Haha.

Well the nifty 50 is a great all round lens for the price. There's nothing else that came close for me in terms of value for money.

If you wanted to spend a bit more, an 85 f1.8 or 100 f2 are also superb and a step up in build but not so good for general photography.

I always feel like the 35mm is too wide for a lot of situations. When I had the 35L I rarely used it. I always prefer a zoom for that range of photography.

But remember drop ANY lens face down on tarmac and there could be tears.

Are you comparing a 35mm on a full frame though? He has a crop sensor, so the same as a 50mm on your camera.

You should always make sure you've got a lens hood on if you're going to go around dropping things, however knowing the build quality of the 50 1.8 I kind of doubt a hood would of been enough to stop it falling to bits (they seem to break if you sneeze on them hard).
Get another 50, but if you can afford it get a 1.4 as they are stronger built. If you can't afford a 1.4 have a look on the classifieds as there's normally a few going a bit cheaper than buying a new one. If you save a few quid, put it towards a strap lol, I feel gutted for you dropping your camera, I dropped mine but caught the strap before it hit the ground and even that made me feel sick, that was a 5D2 and 24-105 L though. Phew.

I had a similar accident with my old D5000 and 35/1.8 coupled.

Left it on a gate and the lens made it a bit too front heavy and bang! On the floor from 1.5m up...

Lens was still fine as I had a UV filters that took the fall.

Body took a bit of a beating...lesson learnt: always carry camera and change lenses with your neck strap on and a £10 UV filter is a life saver!

You say that, I had an Nikkor 85mm macro lens on my D90, it ws on a tripod,
I got my foot caught on the leg of the tripod and the whole lot went flying lens first, cost £120 to fix after being sent away to Nikon, the hood was on it too.

Some good news. The Jessops store manager offered me the £28 insurance and told me to bring the lens when the documents have arrived, then they'll send it off to be repaired/replaced. Slightly happier now.

So Jessops are advocating insurance fraud.

I'm sure their Head Office would be interested to hear.

I would be very dubious about pursuing this, insurance fraud for the sake of of a nifty 50. £28 insurance for a >£100 lens also seems ridiculously steep.

Really? I never thought about it that way. It was the option he gave me, because I'd bought the lens less then a week ago. Don't really want to get in to trouble.

Likelihood is that you won't, but if you do get caught out and the insurers choose to pursue it (again unlikely due to the low value) they could make your life a living hell if they wished it.

I still can't get over the high premium you were given, its about a third if the cost of the lens, it costs me about £100 per year for my insurance but it covers me for a lot more than £300

I just saw it as an option since I wrecked my lens. :(
Could you point me to any good insurance companies? I'm looking at adding some more lenses in the not too distant future.

is there not a compulsory excess on the insurance policy ? i know some have

it might be worth reading the small print to see if there is
with the lens being so cheap to buy going through insurance ( especially if there is excess to pay ) might not be a good idea
not to mention the effect it might have if you decide to take out camera insurance inthe near future

just a thought...
