I went to Guildford on Tuesday to take a few pics and have a walk along the river.
I stopped at a bench at the top of North Street for a quick can of cola and roll a fag, as I got up to grab my camera it had gone.
I only took it off my shoulder for two or three minutes. It's a Nikon D7000 and Tamron 17-50 lens.

Reported and put on immobilise.com

LCE say a known crim tried to sell it to them and they have cctv of it, police are making enquiries.

Keep on at the police before the thug sells it! I hope you get it back. Check eBay and gum tree! Hopefully your house insurance will cover?

Sucks. But I wouldn't be leaving my camera unattended for three minutes on the street. Not that opportunity excuses someone stealing it of course.

Whereas in the past you you didn't mind people knicking stuff.

Dont think there was a need for that I was only sympathising with op

Sorry to hear of that, as a precaution if I ever take my camera off I always wrap the strap around my foot so light fingered wretches cant easily swipe it. Sorry if that sounds as if I'm a know-it-all it's just a suggestion for future events.

This is what I do. Either that or wedge it behind me in my seat.

OP. If he's a know crim all hope is not lost but in any case please remember that not all the world is bad and... don't let the b' grind you down.

Thanks for mentioning immobilise.com, I'd never heard of it but now that I have I think I'll stick everything I own on it.

isnt it about time also that lenses have locks built into them. ive seen in past where a gang distracts someone with a camera and big L series lenes, they approach with a clipboard pretending do a survery and a few other gang members form part of a crowd on the street, the clipboard is used a s distraction. a quick click and flick and the lens is off the victims camera ( even though its around hes neck in front of him ) lens is passed to second then 3rd individual popped in a messenger bag and is away.
this was all captured on a street CCTV but is fairly commonplace.

hopefully they catch the thief and you get your get back undamaged.

Got a call from the police last night, a man was charged with the theft caught on cctv stealing it then trying to sell it to LCE.
No camera found.

So sorry to hear. Now they got the person responsible they should be made to pay for a replacement for you.

That's something at least. I know it's never nice having this happen but at least something good has come out of a crap situation. I hope you get sorted. Do you have insurance and a crime number?

Partial good result then, hope they throw the book!
Do you have insurance cover?

what about taking them to small claims court. surely if they have been caught on CCTV the evidence is clearly there and you can claim for loss. Even if they are penniless the court pays you out and its down to them to pay back to the courts, def worth seeking legal advice as thats pretty much an £800 loss. small claims courts will deal with losses upto £10,000 so well within limits.

dont take the loss mate, thieving barstewards like this shouldnt be allowed to get away with it.

Nice one Dean I didn't know where I stand that's a great help.

Really???
I would like to see more qualified evidence that this is the case, otherwise chasing a penniless offender for money will be throwing good after bad

i know the law has had some changed regarding getting the money back. it depends on what route it goes down , be it civil case or criminal compensation order ( which is possibly the better route )normally with civil cases its against a former employer or a company /store ( faulty goods or and that kind of thing , where they have the funds to pay you back ) . criminal compensation is more geared at an individual and the law used to allocate a "funds pot" to cover such claims. certainly its a clear cut case in the aspect of the thief stealing it. its just whats the best route to take legally to try get something back and also the time scale involved for you to deal with it all.
Home contents insurance mentioned above is a possibility depending on if your policy covers goods outside .
just frustrates the hell outa me that as victims we have to go through all this crap to get back whats ours and even then theres no 100% guarantees.

That's terrible, I genuinely feel for you. I get mad if I lose a lens cap or a lens pen..God knows how I'd be if I had my gear stolen.

On a side note (bare with me on this one) I was assaulted at work by one of my patients late last year. The patient in question is on benefits by the way. My case was taken to Court and I received compensation. He's just finished paying me. I should point out that I got paid 2 weekly by the Court, not as a lump sum which I just assumed would happen.

Still, they have your crime on CCTV, they have the scum, I hope you go after him.

Mine wasn't for the money by the way, for me it was the principle. We can't have schizophrenics thinking they are untouchable because they are locked up. I was more pleased with the court finding him guilty than the money. The money was just a nice bonus.
