Well I thought I might as well join in, being as I work near Portsmouth I'd thought I'd follow the theme by using as much as possible Naval pictures. So here is the first - Accommodation' for 200'ish men and women of our navy.

Hiya Pete,

Like the idea, great photo and I look forward to seeing the rest of your photo52.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn,

Hopefully as long as the job doesn't interfere too much they will reflect how, whereand who I work with. I think it will add a bit more to it 52 that way.

Pete

In that case I look forward to following your 52.

Hi Pete,

Great start to your 52 and I really like the fact that you're adding an extra layer to it by trying to reflect a particular aspect of your life.

It's an inspired interpretation of the theme and the colour palette in it works very well for me. Just enough detail and colour in the sky to give some interest and I like the contrast of the warm brick buildings against the steely grey of the water and ship.

From a compositional perspective it does feel a little busy and cramped to me though. There's a lot going on with the masts and the cranes in the b/g and I'm finding my eye struggling to find a single point to focus on.
I think this would have really benefited from a wider shot, cropped down into a panoramic ratio if required. I just feel like I want a bit more open space around the ship to put it into context.

This is a photo of a "New" corvette ordered for the Trinidad and Tobago Navy. the next ones may be difficult though as i have to go away for about 8 weeks but I will endeavour to post as and when i can following the theme but some may out of sequence or delayed.

Good luck allf or week 2

Have to say, that naval ships don't do a lot for me, but am loving week 3. Nice and sharp :)

Hiya Peter

Your Style shot is just great ,nice n sharp good DOF

I'm not really in to ships but like the shots you have . As said before the 1st just seems a bit busy but guess it's probably quite difficult to ask them to move it to a better position
Good luck with the next shots, look forward to seeng them .Your travells could bring some interesting takes on the themes

First ship I, personally would have preferred it to be of the tall ship in the background, but I suppose that wouldn't fit the theme, although to me it is still drawing the eye.. (prefer older stuff to newer stuff!!)
Second shot, perhaps you could have cropped off some of the sea?

Third shot, wow:)
like it; good depth of focus, good centring, all good:-)

Thanks People,

I knew as soon as I started this I would have some fun with it. Hopefully I can bring some interesting takes with my travels, although i would prefer to be at home. Its cold down here. :D

Hi Pete,

Have to say I love your photo for week 3. The image is sharp and the colours and DOF are spot on. The penguine looks very stylish indeed.

Look forward to seeing what photos you get for your Photo52 whilst on your travels.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Nice collection of pics.

Weeks 1 and 2: nicely exposed and you've got a lot detail in the pics. The sea is very well lit, especially in the second one. For me they both lose a lot by having rather cluttered backgrounds, but not much you could do about that except asking them to move the ships!

Week 3: certainly a very stylish creature. Nicely exposed and you've got the colours really well. A faster shutter speed might have made it a bit sharper.

Hiya Pete,

I have been waiting patiently to see what you came up with for this weeks theme and wow I am impressed.

Your image is perfect for the theme, and looks so calm and tranquil and like you are in the middle of nowhere.

I was sort of expecting an open porthole or something like that to do with a ship, so this has really pleased me.

The icebergs add to the image too, and I love the colours of blue you have captures.

Now I can't wait to see what you come up with for week 5. Only one more sleep till we find out the new theme :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

How did i miss your week 3 penguin shot, that has to be one of my favourites, he looks like he owns the place lol!

Week 4 is well done, the colours are spot on and i love the ripples in the sea in the distance :)

Thank you for all the comments I wish I could add more myself but with limited bandwidth on ship and no access to Flickr there are very few photos that I can view. I am sure everybody is doing better than I am but I am still enjoying it and the comments.

Thank you all

Pete

I'm not doing better. I actually like the 2nd shot. I've no idea why, but I've always liked the reflection of deep blue water on the side of ships/boats, etc, and the effect it gives. That shot is very blue too, which I personally always find calming. Not a very constructive deconstruction of your photo, but I like what I like :D

The penguin is nice, and looks proud as others have said. A little shake on it by the looks of it, but I still think it's nice!

Your ice shot reminds me of the "motivational" posters you see in office buildings, but I like it non the less!

Nice and tranquil open ocean shot. Not too keen on central horizons though. But as the sky is pretty boring - no clouds or anything, I guess you didn't really have much option.

Mentalblock, you are right, at present I am down in the Falklands. The memorial is in Port Stanley, the capital, and yes it was raining.

I must I hadn't noticed I was slightly out on centreing it.

Thank you for all your comments

Hiya Pete,

Another great take on the theme, and how true your words too.

Agree about the rain spots, perhaps they could be cloned. Really like how you have managed to get the moody heavy sky without it being overexposed. Lovely composition with the added colour of the green roof and the gold text on the plinth with some nice contrast.

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

The green of the roof is set off well by the grey sky. Very true words and a meaningful photo

Been a while since I saw the memorial. How's Mare Harbour?

I was last there in 2006, albeit in the better end of MPA. Me being a softie RAF type

My son is serving on HMS Manchester at the moment, he'll no doubt get the pleasure of "Balamory" AKA Stanley & all it's finery!!

You been to Sea Lion Island or Volunteer Point yet?

At least your photography will keep you sane :bang:

Mick

Mick,

MPA hasn't changed in the 10 years since I was last here, no chances for Sea Lion Island or Volunteer Point for us sailor types being at sea and all that.

Thanks for the comments all.

Pete

wow that is cluttered. But I guess where space is at a premium then it can get like that quite easily.

The image to me look a little slanted like it could do with squaring up a bit.I'm judging that on the black strip at the bottom of the door looks like its higher on the left and slopes down to the right.

Other than that nice shot.

Hiya Pete,

I have been waiting for a pic of the inside of a ship, and this fits this weeks theme perfectly.

Great colours and well lit. Agree that it seems slightly slanted.

But otherwise a fab photo.

Cheers

Dawn :)

well I think it is well organised clutter

Thanks for all the comments, I didn't even notice the slope but thats probably because I'm used to it. the ship is always tilted one way or another LOL.

Sorry Tina, no sharpening done by me.

Have a good week all and looking forward to week 7?? :(

Nice one, that's what I call organised clutter (the military like that!).

Minor point, I'd like to see it straight down the corridor (or whatever it's called!).

And that floor needs a good scrub..:exit:

Cheers.

Hi Pete.. loving all your images..beautifully displayed as well.. weeks 1 and 2 stand out for me..
