the first question depends on how far away you would be for a group shot, the closer you get the wider the lens needed.
AS to which settings that depends on several factors such as if sunny-cloudy-in shade- indoors etc
My suggestion would be seriously consider if you really feel you have enough photographic knowledge to undertake the task. If any doubt then maybe you are not ready just yet and need more experience first as to knowledge of your camera capabilities and how to get the best out of it.
I don't think anyone can give a answer as to how you set up your camera or which lens. Not very helpful I know but so many factors come into the equation
You also have to take into consideration how the football team will be lined up for the photo. Will the back row be standing on a bench-the middle row standing and the front row kneeling. Or will they be in two rows making the shot needed to be wider.
Don't let that put you off but make a mess of it a lot of people will think twice before asking you again.
Will you be setting up the team for the shot or has it already been decided?
