Grey card app for Iphone

Dont think I'd trust that - grey cards are made to have low reflectivity. I'd image a reflection off the screen could give a colour cast

Grey cards are designed to be viewed by reflected light. The iPhone app would be viewed by transmitted light (backlit) so would be useless as you would only be metering the light coming from the iPhone and not the light reflected from it. Any colour reference would be totally wrong as well for the same reason.

Is that how it works just showing grey on the screen? I'd have expected something cleverer that that.

I don't think I've ever seen an image displayed on an iphone or ipad that I would describe as 'colour accurate'. Yes, the screens do wonderful things for images displayed on them, but it is not a great medium for creating work to be reproduced in print.

As others have said, it's transmitted light, the screen is reflective..... and without calibrating the screen, it's almost impossible to know if it is actually grey or not. At best your images will have the same cast (though even this depends on with what and how you shoot) which should reduce raw correction time a little.
