Hi folks,

I'll be asking lots of stupid questions soon, this digital stuff offers so much freedom to be creative but still so easy to get wrong.

Background info:
I've had SLRs for 25 years now, I was quite keen on motorsport photography in the early 80s (very amateur). I still have a Konica FC1 (shutter priority) with a couple of primes & tamron zooms from that era. The weight of kit became a pain to cart round on family outings and overcomplicated, so got a lightweight autofocus EOS 500N kit in '99 to be able to use as simple family point & shoot with occasional creativity. Found the EOS a bit of a mixed blessing, the results were often very soft compared to the old manual focussed Konica/Tamron kit, that and the price of developing films kept it in the back of the wardrobe most of the time, even though I splashed out on an expensive 28-105 usm lens to improve quality.

I bought the eldest daughter a compact digital, the Canon A520, a couple of years ago. I've used it a fair bit and the results spurred me to dig out the EOS again, but started to find film difficult to find, so took the plunge and went digital with an EOS 400D this summer.

Currently I'm on a very steep learning curve, the more I learn the more I realise I need to learn.

I've been lurking here off & on for the last couple of months and found it very instructive, so I thought I'd step forwards and wade in . . . stupid questions will be following shortly.

see you in the forums

Hi and welcome  No such thing as a stupid question its all easy when you know the answers
Bob:thumbs:

Welcome, same story as myself 30 years manual Canon FD then took the plunge into digital a couple of years ago, found this place and --- it all became clear as mud. No only joking you will like it here, ask any question and someone will know the answer.

Hello :)

If you have used SLR then you can't help but love DSLR. You can experiment so much and get instant results without additional cost .... until the new toys start catching your eye :)

thanks folks, feeling at home here already

OK, its got to be done but I'll get the pun over with quick:

"gosh, you even speak my language . . . wraaaahhhl"

sorry, so sorry, it couldn't be helped

actually I haven't had much chance to ask stupid questions, usually someone has beaten me to it! It's nice to know I'm not alone.

Got to put together a snappy signature strip, got a few ideas:

"25 years of playing with cameras and still not a photographer" (perhaps, I am still just a happy snapper)

or maybe:
". . . toys, . . . more toys! . . . I need to make more expensive mistakes" (tempting, but she'll kill me if she reads that)

or perhaps:
"it's meant to look like that, it's art" (no, that's not me, had momentary delusions of grandeur there)

hmm and that empty avatar is asking for a cheesy self portrait, honestly never tried self portraits so maybe that's my next goal . . . I'd better go brush my nostril hairs (urrrggghh)

cheers
Lawrence
