That is an interesting site. Actually been around for quite a while, but it has improved a great deal.

www.old-maps.co.uk is also a good site.

Both are very useful for establishing land use histories when completing EA permit applications :D

Well that's some of my afternoon taken care of. I could spend ages on these sites, thanks (y)

All the same for us, except for country boundary changes which we knew...Very interesting nevertheless

I won't be getting much done now. I find old maps so addictive.

Here the Scottish version but it includes England and Wales too. There's everything from standard maps to surveys of lochs from 1600s to more recent surveys from the 50s and 60s. My favourite is the side by side view.

That is an amazing website. An internet treasure.

I'm assuming a view of an old map of my town when I enter it into the search, I get a timeline option but nothing changes from the modern zoomable map.
Strange, it has also stopped working for me. Yesterday, the right panel showed a list of old maps that included the area in the map in the main pane. Now there are no links on the right pane for me, either in safari or chrome.

Try http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&layers=1&right=BingHyb and see what happens. You don't need any more software and can choose the different maps for either side or just choose one map to view. See how you get on.
No that doesn't work either I just get a blank left hand screen the same as the other site.

It can be slow but I've just opened up Fulwood. No particular reason it was just the first place I saw at random.

Have you tried different maps and zoom levels?
edit - I'm using Seamonkey.
