I've been asked to take some photos on a graduation day. They'll most likely all be outdoors, and hopefully the weather will be fairly nice. The shots will be mainly posed. The main question I have is whether flash would be advisable or not. I'll be doing some test shots tomorrow I think, but would I need a diffuser, or should a low fill flash setting be ok? This sounds like a real 'noob' question, but what's the deal with redeye - can I correct his later in PS?

I'm thinking of using my 50mm f/1.8 lens, although I'll have my Nikon 18-70 just in case.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Use the flash off camera if possible to avoid redeye.

Low fill flash should be OK as long as you are not too close, if taking head and shoulders for example I would consider a diffuser.

damn, beat me to it...what he said ^
all you need is a bit of fill flash really - if you're using flash then maybe the zoom lens is fine, have the 50mm in the bag just in case though

That makes sense. I have a fairly decent flashgun that I'll take, plus I'll shoot it all in RAW.

Haha I'm also doing some, today in fact :) I hope the weather holds. I'll be using my 24-70 and my 430ex with the lightsphere on. I'm still learning with it but I'm confident I'll get some good shots. Are yours at the Metropolitan Cathedral?

Got my brothers graduation tomorrow and I'll probably bring the camera along. Sadly I've not yet got an off-camera flash, so I might have to make do with natural light if the weather permits.

Anglican Cathedral I think. I don't have a diffuser for my speedlight, and my Metz flashgun is too big and heavy. Think I might have to improvise with a plastic milk bottle!!

Ah the other one. I had my graduation there. We played on our newly acquired Gameboy Advances ;)

Mine was at the Philharmonic Hall. Not quite as grand, but it was still good to finally know I'd got something from university, even it was just a piece of paper.

I still think the bottle opener I got at fresher fair has been more useful than my scrap of paper ;)

Funny you should say that - I still have the 'Varsity' bottle opener keyring from my freshers fair on my keys, and I use it all the time! Don't even know where my certificates are...
