Im going to the Lake District in the summer and have been advised that taking grad filters with me would be a good idea, Am I right in thinking that soft grads would be better than hard grads for landscape photography.
Also as much as I would like a set of Lee Filter Grads but they are currently out of my price range can anyone advise on a good quality set that would be suitable for my lens with a filter thread size 0f 77mm ( Sigma 10-20mm) my budget is around £80-100

You would be better off buying a 77mm Cokin P style adaptor ring and a Cokin P style square filter holder. You can pick up both of those for less than £10 on Ebay as there's no difference between them and the equivalent Cokin branded ones. I've always used Cokin or Kood square filters and have bought from Crooked Imaging in the past with no problems. I wouldn't recommend screw on filters, especially not for grads because you have no flexibility to move the grad line higher or lower in the frame with them.

I forgot to say, for the 10-20 you would be better buying a slim filter holder which basically only has 1 slot for a polariser and one slot for a filter instead of the normal 2 filter slots on the standard holders.

I've used both hard and soft grads in the Lake District before - both have their strengths, scene dependent. For your money, I think Kood is probably the best you're going to be able to acquire although they do have a slight blue cast which you can correct in PP.
