I'm booking an Alternative model for a photoshoot in a gothic location. Any ideas how to do this? I have a few ideas I'm mulling over. I'll be mixing ambient and flash light and I've got some props.

Whenever I approach a shoot like this I tend to do a little bit of research and collect the kind of images I would like to capture (Deviant Art is good place for inspiration)

Once I have a selection, I then start looking at aspects such as lighting, poses, framing.

Other aspects to consider are how experienced is your model? (how much direction will you need to provide) and what will she be wearing? (If she is wearing latex then her movement / ability to pose may be hampered.)

Approach the shoot with a few ideas in your head and then adapt. I would also start simple - possibly with a range of headshots - simply to warm up and for you to get used to working with each other.

Hope it all goes well and please come back and post the results.

Cheers

Have a search on here (and on the net) for shots from the Whitby Goth Weekend. Those should give you tons of ideas.

She's a pretty experienced model so that's good as I don't have much experience directing people and have to overcome my natural diffidence. So nothing too outlandish at this stage. I will be aiming to underexpose the ambient light and go for a sort of day-for-night effect on some of the shots. For close ups I will be using natural light, reflector and a 50mm f/1.4 for shallow dof. For a grand finale I've got some smoke "bombs" (actually pellets) which I was going to use for mist but they look a bit pathetic and the shoot is in the open air so it might not work.

Thanks for the tip about Deviantart, forgot about that!

I also have a shoot with a Goth Model coming up and found this post with the search for Goth. I think these are great ideas and very sound advice! I think I'll head to DA now and have a look. Happy shooting!
