Last week we took the wee fella to get some photographs taken by a pro who came to his mother and toddlers group premises.

His set up was a white background, 1 big soft box pointing straight at the background and two remote flashes positioned behind where he would sit/stand on the floor.

We got the proofs today, and to be honest, I'm really disappointed in them. My son has blonde hair and in the photo's the sides of his head and hair are totally blown out. Is this likely to be the result of lighting being too harsh, or is a white background not the best with fine blonde hair?

The photo's he took of other kids that didn't have blonde hair are good, just seems to be a problem with the blondies!

It's because the background was overlit and your son was placed too close to it.

What happens is that light bounces off the background and on to your son. The closer he is to the background, the more light reaches him.

Being blond doesn't help, but the problem is really just poor technique/lack of basic understanding of lighting

Garry welcome here - i've read a lot of your posts on another forum and i'm sure you will find some good people here - i also brought one of your guides some time ago - very good thank you.

to the original poster why not speak to the photographer - if he is a true pro he will care about his customers and be keen to keep you happy - repeat business has no add cost
but unhappy customers will cost him lots...
