Well I took delivery this morning of my shiny new Canon EOS 500D and I must say that I am very impressed! I had a play in Full Auto and the quality compared to my old Bridge camera is astonishing. Also had a little play with the manual modes and can see there is a lot to learn! A lot of playing was involved when I should really have been going to bed what with being on a week of night shifts! :bonk:

Can anyone recommend a good 'beginners' book for learning the basics of dSLR photography?

Hi John, I always found the Scott Kelby books really helpful. You can pick up his updated first book (the one which really helped me when I first started off) on amazon for about 6 quid now. I know because I just bought another for my dad who's just got his first dslr.

Peterson's book is how I got my grounding in photography. Just nice plain English, good examples and demonstrations of principles, and it ties it all together nicely.

A read through that and you'll have enough of the fundamentals to just start the long task of snapping away and gaining the experience you need to combine with knowledge.

I really don't think you can beat getting out there and trying things out..

When I first got my 450d last year I got the "for dummies" book for it. Much better than the manual which came with the camera and very easy to follow.
