Just got my new lens this morning. I've tried a few test shots and it's looking good. Just looking for inspiration now. It's a waste of time going down the village and beach - too many tourists. Can't go for a ride, too many cars leaving for home, and don't fancy a traffic jam. Its dull and low cloud outside so I've got to put my thinking cap on now and try to get inspiration. Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

congrats on the new lens barbara

not sure how to inspire you though,i'm finding it quite difficult to get inspiration myself at the moment, what with the weather an'all..

off up the local country park after lunch,so i may well have to console myself with shooting ducks and other various wildlife..

sorry i couldn't be of much help..:)

Why not try your home - see how close you can get and still get everything in. It still surprises me how close you can get :)

Thanks keriok. Lots of photos now of my lens boxes, computer/tog room and runaway cat. Gave up on the house though, as prickly quince bush was in the way.

congrats on the new lens barbara

Thanks Mark. It seems a really nice lens though. Tried to get a really ugly shot of the cat - really close up, looking even more evil than normal, but as soon as he sees the camera, he legs it.
Have a nice time at the park. Barbara

I'd suggest you have a look at this thread ....

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-use-ultra-wide-lenses.htm

Sorry if this is elementary for you, but it sure gave me a whole new angle of use with this lens; so much so that I spent a whole day in London with just this lens and got some really great shots.

I used to think of these wide-angles as "get it all in" until I read this and saw another side of it ... love it more now.

Thanks for the link Wail and some good ideas there, although I don't always like Kens composition. Converging verticals I think are OK when they lend to the arty look of the photo but in the picture of Vegas, it doesn't work for me with the people falling over. What do you think?

Its like christmas, you just can't wait to play with your new toys.

The thing I found with my sigma is how good it is for architecture and buildings as well as landscape. So if you have any nice churches or architecture near by, then worth ago.

I don't know about your part of the world, but are skys have come in nothing but grey for the last six weeks, which is making it very difficult to get a good landscape shot.

Yes it's great to have new toys.:) I'm looking forward to getting out and about to take some buildings, but at the moment the place is crawling with tourists. Skies are completely grey here too, we're just across the water from Ireland. I don't think they're going to improve this year. Monsoons are supposed to be coming in Monday. Oh well, we can hope.

Take a trip to England, it's far more inspiring! ;) ;) :D

I've always been intimidated by ultra-wide angles ... and as much as I loved the idea of trying to get a lot into the picture, I struggled to get a good composition but never figured why.

Having read his thread, I realised I had it all wrong; and such a lens (10-20) is best suited to get a "crammy" shot of something (like the one of his Vegas shot) - at least for me. Though I never liked getting people & objects looking funny, I realised that I can crop them out in PP while maintaining a wonderful view of the main subject from close proximity and with a bit of practice (1 day out in London with just this lens) made me get great shots of people, too, from very close proximity.

What I am trying to say, I've never really mastered the use of ultra wide angles (as great as the 10-20 is) while using his methods has made me appreciate this lens far more than I ever thought.

How about having a crack at rh1944's thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=79789

Within 200 meters of your home I'm sure you'll find some stuff that doesn't include tourists.... ;)

Neil

We only live 200 metres from the beach, so they all tend to overflow into our space, but hurrah, they'll all be going home this week. Don't mind the nice ones though, but hate the kiss me quick hat brigade. I've got tons of pics around home, but must now get some variations with my 10-20mm. Thanks for the suggestion.
