Yes
Finally found a cheap DSLR for my 9 year old after being popped at the post a couple of times on here. Shutter count of 3500 so it should be pretty good. I'm just wondering whether I should give it a test when it arrives ;)

I would. It's a very capable camera.
Heavy for a 9yo.

I had one for a few years, it was my first Nikon. Great camera, but as mentioned, not the best when ISO is pushed. I'd stay 400 or below. And also mentioned, it is a bulky camera [same body as the D300] and might be a bit big for a 9yr old. It's better built, but also larger and heavier than the D7000 range.

As said it's not the smallest camera, however it is a tough camera which may also be important :)

Thanks guys, I picked it because it is robust, cheap, and something I may borrow in bad weather lol.

I don't think he will be shooting high ISO, but thanks for the tips :)

He's going to be so excited to have a 'proper' camera after his coolpix :) He's a big lad for 9 so we shall see how he gets on with it.

My 7 year old son has really enjoyed himself using my old 40D, even managing it with my 70-200 attached for brief periods
If they are keen they will be Ok.

Excellent present for a youngster - will no doubt get him into it very much!

This is one he took today, with a touch of pp. I edited it with him so they are his choices. I'm very proud of him :)

Sadly, he took that many yesterday of random things round the house, his battery was low before we set off.

Important first lesson for him lol, battery management :)

:) I wish I'd been in to photography as a youngster.

Very true - and remember to put the fully charged battery back in the camera ( as I didn't do quite recently  :$ )
